Dandelions
. . .
Jim liked flowers.
He had always liked them, dandelions especially, because they reminded him of his mom. They would make wishes on as many as he could find in the summer and fall, counting the petals fall in the spring before they went to seed.
Jim's hand rapped the table incessantly as he watched Thomas work. It was soothing, in a way -scarred hands gently brushed the bright, hopeful green sprouts before Thomas as he packed the earth around them in small mounds. Jim was supposed to be reading the news, but... he didn't want to look away.
Jim hears footsteps approach him from behind, and a figure leans over the back of the couch. Ivan traces Jim's gaze in the way he does, slow and deliberate, until eventually his eyes land on the pot Thomas is crouched over. Eyes narrowing, Ivan sighs.
"...he's going to get dirt stains everywhere." Ivan mutters. Jim shifts uncomfortably, picking at a small dent in the coffee table. He never really knew how to respond to Ivan.
"... I have a trowel." Jim announces loudly. He winces at the volume. He hadn't meant to be that loud.
"T-to give. To him. For the plant" Jim clarifies, fidgeting with his hoodie strings. Ivan doesn't respond, walking past him into the kitchen where a large stack of papers awaits him on the counter.
Jim takes that as his cue to leave. Getting up from the couch he quickly retrieves the trowel from his room, then heads back, opening the sliding door leading out to the balcony.
Thomas looks up, startled not at the sight of him but mostly by the object he was grasping in one hand. A brief flash of an expression he couldn't name crossed Thomas's face; it had reminded him of something, Jim reasoned. Crouching down next to him, Jim held out the trowel awkwardly. Thomas smiled, and the fogginess in his eyes vanished.
"Would you like to help?" Thomas asked, head tilting towards pot beneath him. Jim nodded, mouth quirking in a sort of lopsided half-smile that probably looked as awkward as it felt.
"...how do you...t-the plants." Jim gestures at the sproutlets vaguely, clearly unsure where to begin. Thomas looks at him quizzically for a moment, then chuckles and begins talking about his garden back home.
Jim liked listening to him talk. Thomas's hat cast a small shadow over his face, and Jim noticed it that it was made with some kind of straw. He'd never seen a straw hat, though it suited him what with the gardening and all.
Jim listened for a long while, not really hearing but the attention was there and really, Thomas was just happy to have someone to talk to about this. After some time, Jim spoke up.
"You think dandelions grow here?" It was an off hand question, one he had asked without really expecting an answer.
Thomas just smiled.
"I'll pick some seeds up tomorrow."
