Sometimes I feel like I set the bar too high but honestly sometimes my personal bar for m/w couples is just like, sitting on the ground
But I guess it's just cause a good chunk of the m/w ships/couples I see are either the bare minimum of healthy or exist in the same place and are forced together by the narrative
Now ofc my bars for different ships are hypocritical, the point is not to say that bland ships or ones with 0 basis are bad (believe me you I have quite a lot of bland ships and rarepairs). It's just that sometimes I refuse to ship a m/w pairing as "the pinnacle of love" if canon has not made me feel that way (there's a difference between "I ship it because it is neat" and "I ship it because of how their relationship is in canon"), or if the characters themselves are just...yanno...a large combination of white, pretty, able boddied, cis, het, you get the point
But it's just funny to me ig. I refuse to ship a lot of m/w ships/relationships in popular media, but sometimes I read a funky book where the mcs are sort of othered by society and feel as if they are monsters because of this, but they accept each other for who they are, or I watch a funky anime where the mc is so sweet that he befriends characters regardless of gender that will go to the ends of the earth for him, simply because he likes them for who they are, and at they make me so in love with their story that gender hardly matters. You know the characters would fall in love regardless if the genders of the characters were changed ig and that's so much better than any "he's a boy she's a girl and that means they gonna fall in love".
The m/w romances that really get me in the end, regardless of the characters identities, are ones that challenge societal norms or depict people that live outside society's norms (by which I mean, people not considered normal by societal standards or seek to challenge those standards, whether in their universes or ours). And sometimes that's as simple as a man and a woman who are obsessed with each other, or a man who sincerely loves his chubby wife, or a woman who matches her husbands chaotic antics, or even just a fucked up fictional man and woman who can and do kill for each other.
There's just nothing in it for me me in ships that are "chadified" by dudebros and are EXPECTED to become canon and widely depicted as white, cishet, thin, pretty, able bodied, etc
So to that first statement up at the top I made I say that yes some ships will never hit the bar for me out of spite but really the bar is so low. The only reason I would raise it out of spite is because of people wholeheartedly praising stuff as if it should exceed my bar when it really... doesn't.
we're all fucked. hahahahaha.
