Neuronetics Next Move

This past April, GE Ventures announced our investment in Neuronetics, Inc., a medical device company focused on developing non-invasive therapies for psychiatric and neurological disorders. While the company focused on treating adults, this week Neuronetics announced the start of enrollment for a clinical trial to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of Neurostar TMS therapy® in adolescent patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).

Depression affects over 2.6 million adolescents in the United States and approximately 11 percent of adolescents living in the U.S. have been diagnosed with a depressive disorder. This is the first randomized, controlled clinical trial to investigate treatment with TMS in adolescent patients with treatment resistant depression.

Neuronetics’ trial will evaluate approximately 100 adolescents (between the ages of 12-21 years old) in the U.S. and Canada, who will enroll in a six-week acute treatment course with a follow-up after six-months.

This first of its kind clinical trial aims to prove NeuroStar as a safe and effective treatment for managing the symptoms associated with adolescent MDD. GE Ventures is proud to support Neuronetics on its journey to improve millions of lives with its TMS technology.

Neuronetics – Addressing Depression Head On

Today, there is a significant unmet need in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Each year, 12 million Americans will experience a depression episode and 45% of them will not benefit from four prescription medication attempts.

This is where Neuronetrics, Inc., our latest investment, stepped in. They looked beyond medication and to technology to help treat the millions of patients faced with this problem.

Neuronetics focuses on developing a non-invasive technology known as “transcranial magnetic stimulation,” or TMS, which a uses a small but powerful electromagnet to deliver energy to the brain tissue through the skull. The result was its NeuroStar TMS Therpay System – the first TMS device cleared by the FDA to treat patients with MDD who have not benefited from antidepressant treatment.

Now, with its latest funding round, Neuronetics will focus on commercial expansion to improve patient access to its NeuroStart TMS Therapy, and develop an expanded indication for adolescents where the unmet medical need is high.
