Hi! Revisiting your bio, I'm wondering, what does neuroqueer mean to you? If you don't mind me asking... Much love!
Hi Fan! 💖Here’s a definition of “neuroqueer” written by one of the people who originated the term. His concept of it is heavy on “to neuroqueer” as a verb: to deliberately, unreservedly express neurodivergence and to encourage others to do so, and to shape the world however you can so it’s more influenced by, and welcoming of, neurodivergence.More links:By E.J. Prince and the Sparkle Brains, by Karrie Higgins(not overtly a neuroqueer post, but very much in the spirit)[cw: disability, ableism, sexual abuse]I started using the term for myself shortly after my younger kid was diagnosed with Asperger’s, back when Asperger’s was still in the DSM. As I looked deeper, I recognized neurodivergent traits in myself. I wasn’t certain at the time whether I was genuinely autistic or just a bog-standard INFJ — many INFJ traits are similar to autistic ones — but I sure as hell am not neurotypical.I call myself neuroqueer because, true to the original definition, I do try to openly express my neurodivergence and to help others feel free to do likewise, and I actively try to make the spaces I occupy more inclusive of neurodivergent ways of being. And I’m queer to begin with, so I’m happy to be multiply queer, as it were.
To me, neuroqueerness is community and effort to make the world safe for all people with unusual, stigmatized brains to thrive out loud without fear of being demonized, suppressed, and erased. Ibby Grace says, “We welcome you to join us, as quietly or as loudly as you feel you can. Be one of us: the requirements for membership are desire and relation. Badassery is of course welcome as well, but you can work up to that. ;)”Thanks for asking! ❤️🌹❤️
