Aaaand the second mini fic is a little peek at what sedah and nevi where like as kids
Sedah Edera was 12 the very first time she died.
She had been angry,so angry that day. Marion -who had already lost the title of mother in her heart -had started it with a lecture on the ethics of encouraging other (less dexterous) children to play bulldog on the rooftops with her. Wasn't her fault if they weren't as good,or if shoving them off was a viable win strategy. That conversation hadn't ended well, and put the child in an exceptionally bad mood. Or,a worse mood then she usually stomped into the training room with. Said training had gone even worse, culminating in a warning slash across her the face from her trainer in return for the furious child aiming for a jugular in a sparring bout. It wasn't deep, but it would scar. "Something to remind you" they had said. All sedah would remember is that next time the killing blow needed to be 2 inches to the left, and hidden within a feint.
She was almost glad for siphon practice when the time came, feelings thoroughly bruised and no comfort forthcoming. Nevaeh always fussed over her injuries, and shot little pouting glares at whoever had done it (even when Sedah had deserved it). It soothed that burning ache in her chest just a little to have her sister near, the only back up against the choking confines of the house. After a few minutes of childish excitement at reunion, words fast and coded in their way,it was time to take places. Sedah's trainer snapped at her to take stance, feet shoulders width apart, hands clasped behind her back. Chin up,shoulders square. Ready. Nevi's mentor guided her softly and sweetly, whispering her through breathing exercises to try and keep the child's storm of guilty anxious tears at bay. Sedah closed her eyes as her sister took the stalling, reluctant steps towards her. Partly because it made it easier for Nevi to start, and partly because she was so afraid. So afraid of the pain,of her sister and what she could do,of the look in the older Cavaliers eyes. That deep soul sapped exhaustion, the profound numbness not even the agony could pierce anymore. And the knowledge that that would one day be her.
"Prepare." Came the call from her trainer, signalling it was about to start. Every muscle in Sedah's scrawny body tensed up,ready for the tiny tap at her temple that would start the flood. Nevi had murmured a "sorry" but they didn't have the focus spare to reply. The agony always started like a dull stab, clawing through jaw bone until it hit the artery of her throat. Then it blossomed into wildfire in the blood. She only managed to open her eyes for a second, enough to witness her sister bathed in a white haze as her own vision began to tunnel black. "STEADY." Came another growl,as her stance began to faulter. That made her remember the cut to her face, which made the agony focus there. The small wound seemed to become an explosion, and she was no longer sure which one of them was crying. There was a distant feeling of vertigo that she recognised somewhere vaguely as her having fallen over, but couldn't seem to care. It was followed by more barking criticism, and even through the pain she felt that burning rage kick up. fine. You want more? I'll give you more. it took everything she had to string thime thought together, and even more to act on it. She no longer tried to hold onto herself in the wailing dark and instead threw herself whole heartedly into it.
Somewhere deep within, she couldn't help but be annoyed by whoever was screaming, wishing they'd shut up and aggravated they only seemed to be getting louder. Deeper and deeper, louder and louder until...snap. no longer clawing and screaming, just floating among whispers. So many whispers. Thousands, layered. All becoming aware one at a time of the newcomer. Somewhere instinctual,She knew this was worse then the pain. In the flesh, all siphoning had stopped and now all present gathered around the body. Nevi was beside herself in hysterical panic, neither adult seeming too concerned. Her mentor carried on calm guiding words, talking her through the theorums to guide a soul back. It took 5 minutes to find her,and another 5 to act as a life line to drag her home, through the grabbing and desperate hands of the savage dead. When Sedah opened her eyes again, her vision was blurry with exhaustion and sound was muffled. She was dimly aware that Nevi was holding her up,face buried against her as she cried. She slung an arm around her sisters shoulders, with the last ounce of strength she had. Over those shuddering sobs though, their mentors beamed in pride at her. That killed her rage in its tracks, filling the space in her chest that had been agonizingly hollow until this moment. She had done good. Done well. People where proud. She couldn't suppress an exhausted grin as she was scooped up by her trainer like a hero,Nevi still clutching her hand as she was taken to be tended to. Over and over her sister promised this would never happen again, but Sedah knew better. She had left a little piece of herself with the spirits and she could feel it,and she saw it in the mix of pride and guilt in the eyes of her trainer. She had just taken her first creeping steps towards the fate of the older Cavs, and no amount of care could avoid that now it had begun. Not that Nevi had to know, she was distressed enough already. And the physical toll was subtle enough. The dark rings around her eyes that never went away might be more obvious but more easily explained. But there was a slight dulling to the once bright white of their hair was more difficult to spot unless they stood next to each other, and unless you knew.
That was the day Sedah Edera learned that she was in fact,a perfect cavalier of the 8th house in the ways that really mattered. Capacity for pain, being as quick and efficient about her own death as that of her enemies. These days she could die and be back standing within 5 minutes. These days the bronze of her skin lacked the vitality of her sisters, hair greyed.
These days the 8th house was run by a genius who could coax even the fiercest spirit to reveal anything at all,and defended by the living revenant at her back.
