Takeshi Abo: Never 7: The End of Infinity - IZUMI
2021 Game of the Year Countdown #8: Never 7: The End of Infinity By: KID Sony Playstation Portable, 2009
I’ve never really given visual novels much of a look, or even really thought of them as games. A lot of the ones I’ve even been made aware of tend to have a certain thing in common about them (read: fanservice). So the fact I ever gave this game a chance is kind of due to just being a bit bored and looking for something new.
I can’t talk too much about the plot because it’d give a lot of the story away, so I’ll just sum it up as a Twilight Zone experience of a group of college kids away on a retreat.
There are multiple endings and I’d bet most players would want to get at least a few of them. The common points are interesting and it’s fun to see how the different routes combine. There is one route that I don’t like because it requires you to be extremely mean to one of the other characters, but all of them contain twists and are satisfying to watch.
The music is decent, although I am not going to link any here because you’ll hear them enough playing the game. One thing I do really like is the inclusion of sound effects, which really immerses you in the story. There is one sound in particular which is kind of haunting and actually gave me goosebumps on one playthrough.
Even if visual novels aren’t your thing, give this one a try. I never thought I’d un-ironically praise one, but here we are.
