After fumbling with your keys, you finally manage to lock your apartment. Your friends insisted that you go out tonight because it was time to move on. You have no desire to go, and it was hard not to take your trouble with your keys as a sign you shouldn’t. But, you had promised them.
You’re lost in your thoughts as you head to the stairwell and nearly collide with a man coming down the hall, “Sorr-” You begin to say but stop when you see his face. Your mouth goes dry, and your heart begins to race. “Mark?” You croak out.
He gives you a shy smile. “Can we talk?” He whispers. You nod and head back to your apartment. The door unlocks on the first try, and you step in, leaving the door open for Mark. Your heart continues to race, and you take a couple deep breaths to force it to calm down. There’s no reason for it to race. Not after everything that’s happened.
“I’m sorry.” The words wreck havoc on your heart, but you ignore it. Turning around, you face him and lose all your nerve. His eyes, mouth, shoulders everything is drooping. “I know I’ve been gone and distant and that you deserve someone better-” You hold up your hand, stopping him.
You could never understand why such a beautiful wonderful man could be so self-deprecating. “I know your busy, Mark. That part of our relationship never upset me. Any chance I get…got to spend with you or talk to you was precious to me. But, I never felt like the same was true for you. I felt like a burden in your life. One more thing, in an endless list of things, you had to worry about. I didn’t want to feel like that anymore. And I didn’t want to add to your list of worries.” You finally say what you’ve wanted to say for so long. You watch Mark’s face for his reaction, but it’s blank.
“That’s the reason?” You nod. A smile breaks across his face, bringing life to his whole body. You eye him, but he just laughs. “I came here today to get you back. I thought- It doesn’t matter what I thought. You are the most precious person in my life, and I’m sorry I ever made you feel you weren’t. Do you have paper and a pen?”
“What?” You can’t believe what you’re hearing, and your heart is about to burst out of your body. Mark doesn’t give you a chance to reply. He walks over to your table and grabs what he asked for.
“You and me.” He says. “Let’s try it again, but this time it’s going to be different. Let’s make a vow.” He starts writing on the paper. “Mark promises to never ever make (y/n) feel like she is a burden to him and to love and cherish every moment he has with her, and (y/n) promises to never leave Mark and instead will tell him whenever he does anything that upsets her.” He finishes writing the sentence and looks up at you. “Now, let’s sign it.” He scribbles his signature and holds the pen out to you. You take it and pause for a moment looking into his eyes before writing your name below his.

The coffee shop is crowded when you enter, and you have to squeak past several clumps of people to make it to the counter. You give the lady your order and quickly step away as another customer takes your place. Glancing around, you try to catch sight of Jinyoung, but it seems the idol hasn’t arrived yet. However, you do find an empty table which you are quick to snatch. You pull out a book while you wait, and you're not far into the first page when you hear your name called. You stand up to get your order, but before you can leave the table, a young man approaches with two coffee cups. “I believe this is yours.” He hands you a cup with your name on it. You thank him “I didn’t want you to lose your table.” He explains.
“That’s very sweet of you.” You smile.
“It feels a bit weird that I know your name, but you don’t know mine. I’m-”
“She doesn’t need to know.” Jinyoung’s voice startles you, and you nearly drop your coffee cup. You hadn’t seen him come in or heard his approach.
“When did you get here?” You ask.
“Doesn’t matter.” His eyes never leave the man who brought you the coffee.
“We’re leaving.”
“Wha-” He grabs your wrist and starts to drag you through the coffee shop towards the door. You shoot the coffee guy an apologetic smile as you do your best to keep hold of your coffee and your book.
Jinyoung doesn’t release your wrist until you're a distance from the coffee shop.
“What was that about?” You ask.
“I was about to ask you the same thing.” His expression is serious, but you can’t help but smile.
“He was just being nice and brought me my coffee.”
“He wasn’t just being nice.” His words are curt.
“You’re right he was flirting.” You admit.
“You’re not allowed to flirt with guys.” You take a step back at that. You two have been friends for a while, and he has never seemed to take an interest in your relationship with other guys. You couldn’t help but wonder what was different this time.

JB glances at the clock on the wall again. The interview is taking longer than it was supposed to. The host says something which makes the other members laugh, and he forces himself to laugh along. The host continues to talk, and JB snatches another glance at the clock. He is going to be late. You’re counting on him, and he’s going to be late. He had made a promise when you two started dating that he would never ever let you down, and he was about to let you down when you needed him most. He wants to jump up and rush out of the building, but he can’t.
The host beings to wrap up the interview. Another glance at the clock fills JB with a little hope. He might be able to make it. The host bids farewell to the fans listening and calls a rap. JB is the first one out of his seat. He thanks the host for having them and is out of the studio and hailing the first taxi he sees.
You stand backstage and take a deep breath. You’re presenting your thesis today. After three long years of sleepless nights and days spent in the lab, it is time to share your findings.
As your adviser introduces you, you take another deep breath and walk onto the stage. As you walk to the podium, your eyes scan the room for the one face that will calm you down and help you through this. But he’s not there. Panic starts to rise in your throat when the back doors of the auditorium fly open. A red faced, breathless JB stands in the doorway. His eyes immediately meet yours. He smiles in relief, and you return the smile. Clearing your throat, you begin.
