I know that some of you mean well. You found a really pretty picture, and you just want to share it--we understand that. I know I was probably guilty of it when I first started using sites like this ten years ago. However, when you repost a picture without asking for permission, you’re stealing.
Artists love it when you reblog from them--unless they state not to do so.
So, next time you see that pretty drawing from your favorite fandom on tumblr, don’t copy the picture and repost it. If the artist has a tumblr, reblog the picture from them.
Do not repost without an artist’s permission!
Ask an artist first. It doesn’t matter if the photo is from pixiv, or deviantART, tumblr, or some other website. It doesn’t matter if you give credit to the artist if you don’t get permission first.
Remember that, if you don’t get permission, even if you have good intentions you will be accused of stealing when caught.
THESE RULES APPLY TO FANFICTION TOO.
A fic author might spend hours writing the latest chapter of a story, but if you’re stealing it from them, even if you’re changing parts of it, eventually you will be called out on it. One only has to look at the date of the post to find out who originally posted.
And there is every chance that stealing or reposting an artist’s work will lead them to cease writing, or drawing, or doing whatever it is they feel they need to in order to protect their work. If they feel like they’re being targeted or like their efforts are being devalued by the thievery, they might stop posting their work for us to like, reblog, and just generally enjoy.
Protect an artist’s right to post freely and do so by reblogging, liking, and favoriting their works as opposed to reposting.
With this in mind, I would like to list rboz, leons-7, hirata-s, shandisworld and blanania as recent and repeatedly violated artists, especially in the Fairy Tail fandom. If you see their work, please send them a message with a link to the repost.
If you ever receive notice that someone has reposted your art, you can report it here.
Help an artist keep rightful claim on their own work.
