When I was reading Never War, and Patrick told Gunny and Bobby he wanted to come to First Earth with them and help, I was thinking, “Come on guys! Let Patrick tag along. He’s so awesome and geeky and he just wants to help!”
I always thought it would have been funny if Patrick had gone with Gunny and Bobby to First Earth. He’d be confused about so many things and would probably be overwhelmed by all the noise and traffic and people. Bobby thought he wouldn’t know simple things like how to cross a busy street. I have this image of Patrick trying to cross the street and cars beeping at him like, “Get off the road!”

“I’m coming,” Patrick announced. “I want to help.”
Gunny looked at me. I wasn’t sure if Patrick coming along was a good idea or not.
“I don’t think so, Patrick,” Gunny said. “We’ve got to hit the ground running once we get back. We wouldn’t have time to teach you all you’d need to know about First Earth. No offence, but you might end up being more trouble than help.”
Gunny was right. Patrick wouldn’t know simple things, like how to get across a busy street. We couldn’t afford to be slowed down by anything, even a friend.
“I understand, Patrick said, looking disappointed.
