all things considered, dr. jekyll did not know jonathan harker particularly well. they had met several times, but only in passing, through mutual connections; at best, the two could only be called acquaintances, not precisely ‘friends.’ nevertheless, in spite of all that, dr. jekyll had taken enough of a liking to harker to extend the young fellow an invitation to the next of his dinner parties, for which he was so well-known around society. on the evening in question, once the guests had begun to arrive and mill about dr. jekyll’s lavish home, it was harker that dr. jekyll sought out first --- and, after exchanging the usual friendly greetings, the doctor turned his attention to the woman on harker’s arm. “ and you, ” he said, smiling broadly, “ must be mr. harker’s charming fiancée. he speaks of nothing but you, madam. ”
