Nevertheless (2021) - 1x09
Jiwan has been very confuse and asking “what” lately. She’s going to become Juliana Valdés
This made me laugh when I got it because I remember noticing that in ep 8 too, she had to work SO hard to feign this cheerful, ignorant front, she was constantly being startled out of it with a "what?"
But I'm glad I waited to answer because if there's going to be a winner of the Juliana Valdes Qué™ gold medal, it has to be
Gosh I loved Sol's reassurance for Jiwan, she is always her top priority, even if it breaks her own heart.
I still can't get over what a ship-defining moment it was. Like, you can visibly see her taking it in
and her mouth moving like she wants to say something, but what can you really say? And then ending in what almost seems like a rueful smile, like, "What did I expect?" and "I guess now I know". It's such a crushing blow to how many years spent daydreaming, wishing, hoping how her literal life might have gone.
I would not blame her at ALL for reacting a bit worse, being a good person doesn't mean you react inhumanly perfectly at all times and we saw how in ep 8 she was actually a bit tetchy but man, when it came down to facing an actual rejection, she really showed what she was made of! What her love for Ji-wan is made of.
It says so much about her, about their relationship, and about Ji-wan who inspires this in someone like Sol, that her first reaction after what she thought was her love breaking her heart was to reassure her friend.
I think i will be content just with the hugs. I mean it's just so perfectly them.
AND I LOVE HOW SOL JUST BASICALLY WENT "DAMN SEO JIWAN AND HER MOUTH" AT NABI WHEN NABI CONGRATULATED HER KSHDKDJK
Ah, I'm conflicted. The hugs were lovely, and the first time that we've seen Sol initiate them, which means so much. Until now she's always had to be so careful about what affection and intimacy she could give, afraid someone might read too much into it, afraid she might mean it too much, but now! Now there are finally no barriers! And that it was specifically hugs, what Ji-wan has given her with such enthusiasm, like, you're right, it is SO them.
Uh...why even was I saying I was conflicted? Oh, right, it's more just what it says about equality and representation and all that, the hets have been making out all over. That's the only reason I'd particularly want one from these two, but like, I'm not gonna say the network or these actors should put themselves at risk for the sake of a kiss. Of course, I'd want one for plot reasons too, they're in love and their emotional and physical chemistry has already been great, so it'd have been nice to see this sweet, emotional little romance capped off with a kiss. Also, would have preferred to see them talking so much more! Like, come onnn, where is the teasing now, where is the "you liked me for how long?" and "I literally followed you to art school".
Hahaha, that Sol-Na-bi convo was the damned cutest. The contrast to angsty exhausted Sol from the previous day to now this optimistic energetic Sol glowing from her happy personal life. And ahhh, I love that Na-bi was just very soft and thoughtful about it and allowed Sol to relax and bask in it instead of panicking, FINALLY being able to talk about her relationship with a friend like the rest have been able to forever.
But why a swing. Do you think it has a meaning for them?
Like they met in a swing back in middle school?
Omg, I didn't even think of that but wouldn't that be the best?? I'd assumed they used the swings after that moment in ep 5 and well, it's not like there's any other place with a particularly meaningful association for just the two of them for Ji-wan to be thinking about Sol, but, they could have gone to the swings in ep 5 BECAUSE of it already being significant to their friendship!
I can totally imagine them as wee kids and probably a loud, energetic Ji-wan running up and Sol, already lovestruck, quietly giving her a pu--wait, maybe it'd be the reverse, since however much it seems like Sol is the quiet friend pining after the fun popular girl, it's Ji-wan who secretly thinks Sol is so amazing and cool (which is why I love this ship! Both just think the other is legit the best), so maybe Sol is the cool kid generously offering her swing to an awestruck Ji-wan.... Either way, that would just be the cutest.
wait I'm dumb and confuse. Where they become gf? in the swing?
Oh, it's not your fault if you didn't get it! It was vague, I think you definitely have to read between the lines.
The whole question at the start is, can Ji-wan be with Sol, romantically, in a relationship? So we get the convo with Sol and Na-bi where Sol thinks maybe not, confirmed with coffee dude, and then we see that the question for Ji-wan is not so much that she doesn't want to, it's that the risk of it going badly is too high for her, she doesn't want to lose Sol.
So by the time we get to the swing, that's what has to be addressed, can Ji-wan overcome her fear of things going badly and losing Sol. And when Sol reassures her that no, her feelings won't ever change (which! So romantic!), like, if there were different censorship rules that 100% would have been where you got the kiss. At least on that second hug, lol. One hug for their friendship, one for the romance.
And I think you have to assume there's only one outcome to that convo, especially once you see Sol so happy with Na-bi, THAT was really more proof than anything else, lol, that either they're together or about to be.
now that we know that ji-wan's main hangup about dating sol was being aftaid to lose her if they break up someday and not the gay part, i'm kinda leaning more toward thinking that ji-wan has been at least somewhat aware of her feelings for a while
Oh, that's an interesting point now that you've brought it up.
The more I think about it, the more you could be right. I was going to say it's probably a mix of a bunch of different things, which is probably true, and there are different levels of awareness, but the kind of...denial that comes with focusing on homophobia is one where you stop before you even really apply it to yourself. Like, you don't even let yourself go to that, it's such a different, distant world (until it's not). "Wow, that sucks, for other people. Glad it's not me, I don't want to deal with that mess."
But if Ji-wan let herself think all the way to what it'd do to their friendship, that's a much more advanced acceptance.
I mean, of course this is a fictional character so we won't know how it was written unless it's specifically addressed, but if she were real, I'd say there were a lot of feelings and emotions swirling and as jealousy made her confront them, the realization of the source made her realize what her biggest fears were, both in a possible romance but also their friendship.
