What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

Fascinating how much thought op put into this simple question. I will try to also put some thought into it lmao

Cherise's favorite flavor is strawberries and cream, and while that mostly applies to dessert she won't balk at strawberry and cream sodas. She also likes Shirley Temples. Things that are bubbly, sweet, and fruity, that's her. Also despite being a minor she has had red wine with dinner since she was like 12, because french. She wouldn't drink cocktails, only sweet wines.

Neville is a rootbeer drinker. As a San Francisco native he buys Mug for himself but at a restaurant if they sell a fancy glass bottle rootbeer he'll try it. Also as a member of the Compact he has strong opinions on the secret Fey flavors of coke. His favorite is regular.

2. What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

Cherise has a number of expensive magic items whose purpose is to allow her to skip her morning grooming as much as possible. These include a powder puff that can do all her makeup in one pat and a hairpin that pulls her hair up into her signature do instantly. She enjoys feeling clean and looking nice, and enjoys cleaning herself, always brushing her own hair rather than relying on the pin. She loves long baths.

Neville keeps clean because he hates being grimy but does not take very much care of himself or his appearance. The sole exception is his hair, which, being curly, requires extra attention, at least if you don't want it to get all twisted and knotted, so he always takes the time to comb his hair properly whenever he notices the sun has come up.

3. What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

They're both teens from moneyed families. They get good allowances but seeing as they both attend private boarding schools they mostly spend that money on food or clothes. Well, Cherise does. Neville spends most of his allowance on crafting materials and gas for the car. Though this does give me the idea to write some kind of story about one or the other needing to buy something...

4. Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory) 

Cherise has a few scars on her body and neck from the incident in her youth where she was bitten all over by a swarm of baby dragons. They've mostly healed, so for the most part they just look like faint, pale, razor-thin lines on her skin. She has no other scars despite taking far more grievous wounds owing to her powers.

Neville doesn't have any scars.

Earlier versions of their story gave them both a baptismal mark that defined their powers; Cherise had a pair of wings on the back of her neck, and Neville had an anvil on his arm.

5. What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

Cherise doesn't full on sob often but is easily moved to tears by things that are very sad or very cute, like if she found a very small dog.

Neville last cried after his breakup with his ex, Elmindreda. However he has teared up from physical pain after that, though he doesn't think that counts.

6.Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Cherise is the youngest of two children. Her brother Luc is at least ten years older, old enough that she looks up to him as an almost heroic figure. She's never been around children her age until she went to the Scholomance; he's the closest thing she's got.

Neville has two sisters; a twin sister named Nancy and an older, adopted sister named Dolores. Dolores is away at her higher educatation and he respects her. Nancy attends Neville's same school and they don't get along that well. They love each other, but don't hang. Neither of them knows who is older.

7. Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Cherise has a lot of different shoes. In any given art of hers currently existing she's probably wearing heavy riding boots suitable for a knight, often covered in metal sabatons. For everyday wear though, she likes a cute, comfortable shoe, typically in red. She wears heels for special events but usually it's flats or if she needs to walk, boots. She has exactly one pair of sneakers, a hideous pair with a rainbow science pattern on black that she loves because they're comfortable and because Neville gave them to her.

Neville wears a sensible brown shoe for the most part, either his school loafers or some oxfords. Once he starts doing more adventuresome stuff he invests in a pair of Timberlands.

8. Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

Cherise's room at the Scholofrance (Paris Scholomance) is small and spare, because the Scholofrance dorms are medieval peasant houses that have been slightly modified for modern living. There's hardly any room for personalization, but she has brought some nice blankets from her home, as well as stands for her weapons, made for her by her brother. Her bedroom there is a beautiful princess bedroom with fluffy blankets and pillows, her collection of plushies, and bookshelf laden with knightly romances and other such things. A painting of the battle of Roncevaus Pass hangs over her bed.

Neville's bedroom is crowded, as he and his family live in a nice townhouse in the city, albeit bigger than Cherise's dorm. He has the inverse situation from Cherise, in fact, having more room at his dormitory than at home. He's by and large moved his tinkering supplies to the Scholomance, leaving most of his media collection at home (film reels, videos, vinyl records). The Scholomance dorm contains his book library because it's more immenently useful, as well as a coffee maker, a mini-fridge, and various trophies from his adventures. It also has a four-poster bed, as most scholomance beds do.

9. What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.) 

Cherise is a Christmas girly, she loves Christmas, she's always on the Christmas shit. She lives giving gifts and receiving gifts, caroling, drinking hot drinks, staying up late and telling ghost stories until midnight, then running and "hiding" from Pere Noel while he leaves the presents. Being religious, her family also goes to nighttime mass.

Neville's favorite holiday is Halloween. While he doesn't care for the dressing up aspect, he takes it as an opportunity to inflict a Universal Monsters Marathon on his loved ones.

10. What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.) 

Cherise always carries at least one weapon on her person, though the actual weapon varies based on the time in the story. After Long Sunday, it's the bone tanto Neville gave her (wow he gave her a lot of stuff that day!) She also always wears a pair of earrings with blue glass spheres for gems because they match her eyes, and of course her hairpin.

Neville always has his messenger bag on him. It's enchanted to provide not only storage but to fit his current needs; for example, it provided a pair of shoes for Cherise when she needed them (it gave her the galaxy print ones).

How does your character view the idea of romantic love?

Cherise is enamored with the idea of love and has been ever since she was a child, when she had a dream of a beautiful boy dressed in blue waiting for her under a streetlamp. She wants a storybook romance and a lavish wedding. She sees love as an incredible and wonderful thing, but rare and to be treasured.

Neville sees love as a vulnerability that people can exploit you with and is very careful about sharing his heart with anyone and at the beginning of the story would really prefer not to.

2. What was your character's first heartbreak, and how did it influence their approach to relationships?

Cherise has never had her heart broken. Perhaps she will experience heartbreak of a kind later on but her and Neville are endgame so whatever hurts their relationship causes will heal. On a lighter note in earlier versions of the story she dated Gabriel Foxblade before Neville, a super chuuni edgelord type of guy. She had thought he was her type (dark hair, sword fellow) but unfortunately he turned out to be a lame conversation partner. this did not disillusion her on seeking out love though, it just made her think that perhaps not everyone is destined to find it, and that she definitely should not go on dates with the first handsome swordsman she meets on the street

Neville's heart was broken in his first relationship the previous semester, with Mindy, who was very needy and manipulative, using her vampire mesmerism on him to the point that he gained immunity. It really made him wary of meeting new people, particularly women and girls and vampires,

3. Does your character believe in soulmates, and why or why not?

Cherise absolutely does, mainly because they exist in all her favorite courtly romances. the fact that many of them end in tragedy doesn't matter.

Neville doesn't because soulmates and prophecies contradict the theological concept of free will. unfortunately he has a prophecy about his soul mate

4. What traits does your character find most attractive in others?

Cherise, Physically, she likes people taller than her (easy to accomplish), dark curly hair, big hands and physical strength. Aside from that she loves people who match her idealized image of chivalry, as well as emotional intelligence and knowing many skills

Neville likes long, well maintained hair, colored eyes, beauty marks. Non-physical traits include intelligence, shared interests, and after Mindy, the ability to make him feel at ease. as a bonus he realizes that he's attracted to people that make him laugh after meeting Cherise

5. What does your character fear most in a relationship?

Cherise is afraid of being let down, that she will invest a part of her soul into a relationship only for the other person to not do the same, or to turn out not to be who she thought they were.

Neville is afraid of Mindy's brand of one-sided dependence, and he is afraid in a more general sense that he might have to go through the same rigamarole of meeting someone, opening up to them, showing them his scars, and then it not working out and having to start all over again with someone else. best to just not

6. How does your character handle jealousy or insecurity in relationships?

Cherise thinks a bit of jealousy and insecurity is natural, especially at the beginning, a growing pain that you grow out of

Neville is very insecure generally. He doesn't particularly feel jealousy very often but he is wary of other people expressing it

7. What past relationship still impacts your character's current life?

None for Cherise unless I bring back the Gabriel date. As for Neville, I've already said

8. How does your character show love and affection?

Cherise is a quality time gal, but she also likes giving compliments.

Neville is a gifts kinda guy, particularly things he makes himself

9. What significant change has your character experienced in their understanding of love?

Cherise is going to learn that it's not all impassioned declarations and big romantic gestures.

Neville is going to learn that it's worth the risk of a broken heart

10. What sacrifices has your character made for love, and were they worth it?

The plan for the great Cheriville romance arc is that they're mainly just gonna be happy and together, drawing strength from each other during the course of the story, which I feel doesn't frequently happen in a lot of genre stories that have a romance plot. they always hinge it on the Will They/Won't They and I'm not about that. This is a long convoluted way of saying that, while I don't think making sacrifices for their relationship is off the table, I don't currently have plans for it to happen. It might and perhaps even will for some good drama but I've got no current plans.

11. How does your character's cultural or familial background influence their views on marriage and relationships?

Cherise is French, Catholic, and was raised in a castle by her family, all members of a knightly order that defends the mundane world from magical threats. So she is very big on the passion and the big romantic gestures but also on the concept of getting married and having kids

Neville is American, Jewish, of mixed heritage and was raised by a family that, despite being part of the magical community, are also big on living in the mundane world. He has a more modern view of things and a cynical view of the dating game.

Both of them have parents that are happily married, but while Cherise sees it as aspirational, Neville is worried that he'll never find something like that. Additionally his paternal grandparents had their own epic love story and it's hard to live up to that.

12. Does your character have a relationship that everyone else misunderstands?

There will be a period of time after Cherise and Neville confess their love that they will be doing the long distance thing. People who know Neville but have not met Cherise will assume that he is pretending to have a Canadian European girlfriend

13. How does your character handle rejection or unrequited love?

Cherise would be heartbroken if she were rejected because she would only go after someone that she is already hearing wedding bells over. But she does sort of romanticize pining over an unrequited love and has practiced laying about and sighing.

Neville would never be rejected because he simply would never make the first move. He assumes all love is unrequited until informed otherwise. So he'd just be sad about it. but regular

14. What lesson about love is your character still trying to learn?

Refer back to question 9

15. How has your character's professional life affected their romantic relationships?

they're both starting this little arc as teen students so it's not really a "career" they have going on. Neville definitely suffered academically after his breakup with Mindy, though it was toward the end of the semester so he was still mostly fine. Cherise has a revenge arc lined up after meeting Neville but she's not sprung enough to put it on hold for him (well, except in The Long Sunday where she was also stuck in San Francisco so it wasn't feasible).
