The art work you did under the 'favorite expressions' line is really beautiful. It really brings tears to my eyes looking at them! But I was wondering, where did you get your insperation? I recognize the Damian one back from when Dick was Batman (I think...) and I thought the Jason one might be from Under the Red Hood, but I wasn't really sure. Are they all from different comic books you've read? Thank you for working so hard on these pictures (and on all your works), they're absolutely amazing!
They are, actually! I tried to tie ‘em to quotes (paraphrased or just Good Fit) for a specific point or theme in each of their character arcs that I really connected with. for context, I am mainly All About the preboot universe and just slap specific storylines from New52 and beyond as an extension onto that universe.
Damian: quote is riffed from an observation Dickbats made, but applied to the recurring them in Damian’s early (/continuing) conflicts with Bruce
Dick: another riffed quote, this time from Alfred, focusing on the stress and internal conflict Dick went through when he first picked up Dickbats again -- trying to be strong on way too many fronts and feeling like he was failing at all of it
Tim: quote is paraphrasing what his entire Red Robin arc was about and the same kind of dialogue that kept cropping up (believe -- in bruce, in himself, no one believing in him, etc.). context is riffed from this set of panels
Jason: quote paraphrasing Jason’s conflict/feelings on Bruce’s inaction following his death, and definitely all inspired by Under the Red Hood. for the record i still get choked up from just the memory of “BECAUSE HE TOOK ME AWAY FROM YOU”
Steph: quote is me trying really hard to summarize her entire character development from Spoiler to Robin to Batgirl, and that frustration of constantly being passed up, dismissed, and told to quit when all she needed to succeed was someone to take the time to be a real mentor to her
Cass: quote is also me trying and failing to find a good way to put into words exactly what was so intrinsically good in Cass that, despite knowing no other life, she was still driven to find the strength to refuse her reality, break out of her hell, and seek out something better even if she didn’t know what “better” even was until she got out.
to be honest i wasn’t even going to do a series after dick and damian (as an artist, man, i have no patience/focus for doing series) but i have a lot of strong feelings and love for each of these kids and their stories and it happened...
