Hi! How are you? I was trying to get into Atlantis and Namor lore, but I found all the different underwater tribes and the different cities all named Atlantis a little confusing. Do you know which stories or texts I should read to understand it better?

Hi, I have a complement question to my previous one about the history of Atlantis and the tribes... Do you have any recs for someone who wants to know the lore around Namor and Atlantis in general? Thanks in advance!

The Sub-Mariner Lore for Atlantis is scattered throughout 85+ years of comics and are very contradictory because Marvel never cared about consistent world building for Namor. I'm just talking about the Sub-Mariner Lore for Atlantis and not Atlantis for Marvel as whole because there's lore in the Conan comics too. The reason there's so many different cities all called Atlantis is because Marvel has no imagination and they have been blowing up or destroying Atlantis since the beginning so the Atlanteans move around and rebuild.

The very short answer is that you will find the most world building/stories set in Atlantis during The Silver Age, comics like Tales to Astonish and The Sub-Mariner (1968) series. King in Black: Namor (2020), and Atlantis Attacks (2020) is also great for more Lore. There are books like; Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #1, All New Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #1, Marvel Atlas #1-2, Marvel: Map by Map, History of the Marvel Universe (2019) #1-2 that all contain most of the collected information about Atlantis and it's history.

Pre Atlantis - Tha-Korr's City was the home of the Submariners in the seas around Antarctica. Found in Marvel Comics/Marvel Mystery Comics, and other Golden Age Comics.

January 1949 - Sub-Mariner Comics (1941) #31 - The first time Namor mentions that he and his people are descendants of Atlantis, before this they were known as Submariners, a original race of native sea dwellers.

Fantastic Four (1961) # 4 - During this era Namor is cured of his amnesia by the Fantastic Four and travels home only to find it destroyed, he later finds out that it had been an outpost that was destroyed, then reunites with his surviving people in Fantastic Four (1961) Annual 1 - Evolution Origin: Atlantis is a naturally evolved civilization, the people evolved to live in the sea.

Saga of the Sub-Mariner (1988) #7 - talks about how Atlantis (aka Tha-Korr's city) was destroyed, and so they left to build a new city of Atlantis to the north which becomes the main Atlantis that is used in the comics and is the one seen in Fantastic Four comics - onward. There is another city called Maritanas still in Antarctic waters.

Namor does visit the ruins of Tha-Korr's City/Old Atlantis when he goes to visit his mother's grave in The Sub-Mariner (1968) #17

Tales to Astonish #70-101 - have stories that take place in main Atlantis.

The Sub-Mariner (1968) #9 + 62-66 - Tales of Atlantis Origin - First encounter with Naga, worshipper of Set. History of The Great Cataclysm and the war with Lemuria, stories of battling under sea tribes fighting for control, the Rise of Kammu, Namor's ancestor, the establishment of Atlantis under the seas.

Basically the thing to understand is that there is Atlantis and Lemuria as the main undersea cities/civilizations throughout the comics. Empress Llyra of Lemuria is introduced in The Sub-Mariner (1968) #39

Alpha Flight (1986) #40 - Namor and Marrina leave Atlantis and built their own city called Deluvia.

Namor, the Sub-Mariner (1990) #25-40 - The Suma-Ket & Artys Gran arc, this is perhaps one of my fave takes on Atlantean Lore, how there was once a Witch King called Suma-Ket who was a false prophet. Not an Atlantis origin but a arc that does add lore the Atlantis mythos and world building.

Atlantis Attacks (1989) is a comic event that has lots of crossovers, I wouldn't recommend it but it's supposed to be centered around Atlantis. The basic plot is Namor is thought dead for most of it until he comes back and stops Attuma, Ghaur. and Empress Llyra from their plan to bring back Set, evil god.

Fantastic Four: Atlantis Rising (1995) - Atlantis is pulled from the sea by Morgan Le Fay

Silver Surfer (1996) #124 - New Atlantis is built undersea, where Atlanteans have relocated, this used to be the city of Martinais.

Inhumans (1998) # 4, 9, and 12 - Attilan and Atlantis tensions rise with humans, and then the island that was risen is sunk once more.

Man-Thing (1997) #7-8 - Namor finds The City of the Golden Gate and travels back in time to pre-cataclysm Atlantis and visits his deity the Goddess Cleito. Mentions of how Atlantis was once 10 kingdoms

Sub-Mariner (2007) - Ends with Namor destroying Atlantis so that Iron Man and the Americans don't occupy it/take it over.

Agents of Atlas (2009) #6 - Oceanus - another city that's rebuilt to be used as the main city because Namor's people are wandering the seas.

Incredible Hercules (2010) #123 - Amazon vs Atlantis Origin. (Poseidon/Neptune is used interchangeably in the comics) Not my fave take, but another one of the origins.

Namora (2010) - Namora seeks an Atlantean settlement to see why they have not joined the empire, and to bring its people to Oceanus.

Uncanny X-Men (1963) #519 + 520 - New Atlantis (again) - Magneto and Namor form an alliance, Namor's people will build their undersea city beneath Utopia to support it and stop its crumbling into the sea, and the X-Men will help and protect Atlanteans.

Namor: The First Mutant (2010) is based in New Atlantis. New Atlantis is destroyed once the Phoenix Five are defeated and the floating Utopia City crashes back into the bay, destroying New Atlantis. Namor is seen living among the ruins of New Atlantis in AvX: Consequences #4 and other comics of that era.

Namor's people are homeless once again, wandering the seas.

By the time we come to Hickman's Secret Wars Era (Avengers (2013), New Avengers (2013) Illuminati, etc) Atlantis is just there. It doesn't seem to be the New Atlantis of Utopia but just Atlantis.

By now Phoenix King Namor had drowned Wakanda in AvX, and tensions are high between Atlantis vs Wakanda, they were in a cold war of sorts. Small fights, warriors hunting down Namor, or other small interactions throughout the comics. It's not until New Avengers that it becomes a full blown war between them. Namor had tried to set a peace treaty with Wakanda, but T'Challa and Shuri didn't accept it.

New Avengers (2013) #7-9 - Shuri secretly sends her warriors to invade Atlantis and kill Atlanteans while T'Challa distracts Namor.

Atlantis is attacked and destroyed again. Then Wakanda is attacked when Proxima Midnight is directed there by Namor. Atlantis and Wakanda are at war throughout the Secret Wars event.

Squadron Supreme (2016) #1 - Hyperion raises Atlantis from the sea and destroys it. Namor is murdered. Hyperion does this as retaliation for Namor destroying his world during Secret Wars.

Squadron Supreme (2016) #15 - Namor has be resurrected in previous comics, and in this issue Hyperion helps Namor rebuild Atlantis.

X-Men: Red (2018) #6-7 - Abomination (not the og) is sent to attack/destroy Atlantis during a time where Atlantis was used a base for Jean's X-men team.

Namor: The Best Defense & Defenders: The Best Defense (2018) - Vodan/The Vodani Origin. Namor seeks to bring the lost Vodani people back into the Atlantean Empire. It's explained that Atlanteans are actually aliens from a water world called Vodan, and they traveled through a undersea portal to Earth to set up a new home. The people split into two factions: The Vodani & The Atlanteans, they fought, the ones still calling themselves Vodani left Earth and vew Atlanteans as pretenders and Namor as a false king.

This isn't a origin I like or enjoy. I don't enjoy the Atlanteans being made into water aliens. This isn't really brought up at all in comics outside of Best Defense series and like 2 issues of Invaders (2019) and also one mention in Marvel Universe: Map by Map.

King in Black: Namor (2020) #1-5 - features Atlantis, and introduces lore about the Chasm People, Attuma's people.

Atlantis Attacks (2020) #1-5 - features Atlantis, and introduces lore about the Sirenas.

Edit: Forgot to add that Namor (2003) also contains stories about Atlantis, and Namor's people moving around after oil mining/spill makes it impossible for them to live there.

This post isn't a complete "every time Atlantis is attacked" or "here is every single city in the seas" post however I'm capturing everything I can remember about significant events and lore about Atlantis. There's going to be other comic stories that feature Atlantis that is not included here, but I hope this gives you a summary of the History of Atlantis for Sub-Mariner Lore.
