NEW BABBAGE
I made some new friends in SC yesterday (:
If I fit.. I sit.
Since Star Citizen is still in a very alpha stage, I will limit my play-through as a tour of the Stanton system to see what the different planets have to offer.
My starting home base was on planet MicroTech, named after the company who owns it, and its capital city New Baggage. The city itself is clean and the image of a hopeful, futurist utopia. A visit to the company store makes it clear MicroTech is loosely based on Apple.
The planet is mostly made of icy, snowy, hostile environments with some temperate forests and tundra. This is something I wish games like No Man Sky had more of - multi-weather or ecosystem planets.
The outposts and caves scattered around the planet and its moons make it something worth re-visiting later.
This is where I learned a few newbies tips the hard ways:
- always stay in control of your thrust limiter, or it is very easy to smash into the orbital station or an outpost on the ground of a low gravity moon.
- only carry the bare minimum. You will lose everything you have on you or yours ship if you die.
- always turn the engine off and leave the power on when leaving your ship for a delivery or to explore a cave. The winds on these planets can be strong enough to toss your ship away like a leaf and leave you stranded.
- investing all of your savings into a full cargo to resell elsewhere for a profit is extremely risky. You can loose it all in an instant after a crash or an attack from pirates.
Still, if you can live with frustrating bugs, the game is playable enough to run a few deliveries, mine some rocks, explore caves or defend outposts from outlaws, and start making a profit toward your next ship.
Past glories
Ambition was my idol, which was broken Before the shrines of Sorrow and of Pleasure; And the two last have left me many a token O’er which reflection may be made at leisure
Now, like Friar Bacon’s brazen head, I’ve spoken, ‘Time is, Time was, Time’s past’, a chymic treasure Is glittering youth, which I have spent betimes— My heart in passion, and my head on rhymes.

Downsizing again?
For several years, my alts and I have operated Babbage Blade & Bowls, a recreational facility right on the Vernian Sea entrance to the Babbage canal network. It features a ten-pin bowling alley, En Garde piste, Greedy greedy table, and free rowboats and bicycles for hire. (It also sports my Subscribe-O-Matic and our skybox home base.)
Unfortunately, money is getting tighter than we would like. Due to a combination of RL bills and dearth of SL tips, we’re back to limping from week to week. What that means is simple: the BB&B(&B) might have to shut down.
However, we don’t really want to leave New Babbage, so we have our eye on a corner shop in the Capability Mews, which backs onto the canal. Here, we’ll slash expenses by 2/3, still be able to hire out bicycles and boats (thanks to cunning use of root prims and a door that’ll teleport you through the wall), maybe have a gallery of my photography, and set up a little sorbet and juice counter for Maku to play with.
I don’t want to do this, but I don’t need the additional stress.of scraping up L$1030 a week for rent on top of my RL burdens. We used to try to host events for bowling and fencing and even fishing years ago, but the changing RL situation put the kibosh on those.
I’m unhappy about this, but everyone knows things change. I’ve been wrestling with re-meshing the buildings as it is. I also want to work out how to make a more in-theme ninepins game, and I was looking at expanding to blimp rentals.
But all of that is likely to go by the board. I need to live within my means... and it’s likely that the BB&B(&B) will be gone within the month. Sorry folks. Financial reasons.
oh. ooooh. OOOOOH!!
You have no idea how much I’ve been wanting to talk about this place! So much, in fact, that I posted this to the wrong blog initially! XD
So! Academy of Industry! it’s actually a sub-portion of a larger conglomerate of sims known as New Babbage!
This is a steam punk sim through and through. bit of magic, bit of sci-fi. but predominately Steampunk.
Now, I could talk about simply the Academy, but it’s a building describing a bit of architecture, and is also a sandbox. There you go.
The entire city however, has PLENTY to offer. theaters, housing, RP opportunities aplenty, shopping, you name it! New Babbage has more clothing and furniture shops than you can shake a stick at!
Each structure is beautifully crafted to fit within the environment that New Babbage is trying to create. little, if anything, clashes, and is simply a sight to behold. I’ve been there several dozen times, and I still find something new with each visit. This is what all multi-sim areas should strive to be!
It’s an Ecclescraft podcast, with added steampunk rowboat action. Hooray.
