Why didn't you include the forced donation of the Gift in Jaeharys bad decisions? And why include the Doctrine of Exceptionalism? It put an end to religious hostility while preserving their (assumed) dragon-riding abilities.

The New Gift I didn't include because it amounted to little in the way of actual headaches for Jaehaerys. Ellard Stark supported Laenor in the Great Council of 101, but he was outnumbered 20-1. There was no Northern rebellion, no secret assassinations, not even mention of skimmed tax payments.

And as I said before, the problem with the Doctrine of Exceptionalism is that Jaehaerys was too grandiose in its claims. He forgot the basic rules of the con, when you include details in your lie, it makes it easier to call out and debunk by someone knowledgeable. Targaryens had already succumbed to illnesses before, so for Jaehaerys to make that part of the rationale is just baffling. When you lie, be vague about details that your target will know.

Don't you think Bran gifting a Tully fish to Jon by the end of the story is in way objectifing Sansa as a means to reward him for his sacrifices ?

Not really.

I mean, he cannot literally give Sansa to Jon. If the trout (and why make it a trout otherwise) is supposed to indicate a Tully girl, it would indicate giving Jon the opportunity to be with Sansa (and vice versa), not handing over his sister as a present regardless of her own preferences. Which would also be utterly impossible if the North is going to be independent. Especially if Sansa is the queen.

In order to be able to marry Sansa, Jon would need to have some kind of standing, have some kind of title or position to qualify him. Renouncing his “trueborn” Targaryen heritage (so it exists, which I suspect is true) would reduce Jon to a landless, title-less bastard. He doesn’t even need to be exiled to the Wall for this to make a match unfeasible within their deeply classist society.

Bran as King in the South has a unique stake in lands North of the North (but South of the Wall) that are no longer in the dominion of the Starks: Brandon’s Gift and the New Gift. Lands that would be free when the Wall is history and the Watch is gone.

His lord father had once talked about raising new lords and settling them in the abandoned holdfasts as a shield against wildlings. And wouldn’t that fit? A Gift for a gifted fish? Brandon’s New Gift? And who better suited for the lordship than the guy who invited the wildlings in the first place?

All of a sudden, a high lord appears as dreamed up by Ned, brave, gentle, strong. Worthy of a queen.
