Dami’s Teddy Part 7
Shameless ao3 plug
----------
Danny held a hand over his mouth. He was going to be absolutely sick. The mark was undeniable. The sigil was his. The only other person on the planet that had that mark was Sam. Because he let her do the one most intimate thing a person could do.
A ghost’s core is the only organ that really matters when your made of ectoplasm. It’s your energy source, the keeper of your obsession, your heart. Without it, a ghost will corrupt and deform into something that Danny used to fight as Phantom. Some people called them monsters but that’s not it. Not really. A core held everything that made a ghost themself and it was symbolically very important.
Ghosts have been known to give their cores to their lovers for safe keeping as a show of affection and immovable trust. But more often, the most important ceremony a ghost could perform was allowing someone to hold their core in their hands and place the energy against their lips as a seal of connection. Two souls forever intertwined by a kiss.
Those ceremonies were very intimate and could only truly work between souls that are destined for a deep bond. It could be romantic or familial, sometimes even really close friendship but that was a rarity. Most humans thought of the bond sigil as a form of ghost marriage.
Which was the cause for Danny’s nausea. These people were going to think he was some predator that took a child groom when in reality he had no idea how his bond sigil ended up on Damian’s neck. He couldn’t even really remember how they met anymore… why was it so foggy? Fuck-
With a start, Danny realized his memories from before he was Danyal were clouded in a haze. He couldn’t remember Sam’s face clearly, the smell of his mother’s perfume. He couldn’t quite recall the feeling of a hug on his skin from his sister…. J- J- what- what was her name…. Danny couldn’t remember…. Fuck-
A tear ran down his face as his body suddenly felt foreign and wrong, a gross feeling beginning to fester in his stomach. He wanted to gag again. Was his skin real? Or was he just a specter? Nothing made any sense and it made Danny feel disgusting. If Danny was his real name. He remembered it vaguely, a smile on black painted lips as they called him that.
Danny barely felt it when he was restrained. He didn’t much care. The fight in him was gone. He couldn’t remember. He couldn’t…. Why couldn’t he remember… only full ghosts tend to forget. Why- why couldn’t he remember?
He curled in on himself. Magic shackles pulled on his wrists and neck, it would have choked him if he needed air. There was no point pulling himself out of it. They were right after all. He had marked Damian with his sigil. Maybe he was dangerous. It wasn’t like he could remember. It wasn’t like he could disprove anything at all. Maybe he was a monster.
…
Alfred watched in horror as Constantine pushed him out of the way, pulling Danyal by the collar, a magical shackle appearing around is neck like some kind of animal. Shackles appeared around his wrists next as he pulled his thin body into a ball on the floor, seemingly unaware of what was happening to him. He looked distressed. Something was wrong.
Alfred stumbled on his feet, his age betraying him as his knees buckled slightly from the harsh shove. He felt himself get caught and looked to see Young Master Damian with a bloodlust in his eyes he hadn’t had since he was a child.
“Constantine! Stop!” he heard Raven cry as himself and the young master were suddenly compressed inside of some sort of barrier. It was invisible to see but Alfred knew he was being willed to fall to the floor, Young Master Damian falling to his knees beside him.
“They are trying to protect it! We have to separate them from it until we can remove the marriage contract,” Alfred snarled at the incompetence leaving Constantine’s mouth.
A lot of things happened after that. Alfred could barely keep up with it. Everyone began to shout. Raven raised her fist, dark energy swirling, threatening Constantine in some fashion, Zatanna trying to stand between them. Nightwing and Master Bruce stepped back from the chaos and Alfred lost sight of them behind the other titans, gearing up to back up Raven. Alfred thought he may have seen Beast Boy turn into a dog for a moment.
Anger surged inside of Alfred’s old bones and he knew that Young Master Damian was just as enraged. Neither of them could hear anything clearly except one another, an effect of the magical force keeping them on the cement flooring no doubt.
“They are gonna hurt him Alfred,” Damian growled as he struggled against the invisible and just as immovable force. The young man’s face was twisted with rage, his eyes dark with animalistic bloodlust. Alfred couldn’t say he looked any better.
No matter what may have happened, Danyal did not want to hurt anybody. He was Alfred’s closest friend that made the manor feel less empty while the children were away. And in a similar vein, Alfred could imagine that the phantom boy was Young Master Damian’s very first friend. At least after moving to the manor. But from what Danyal has told him, Damian never let anyone get close to him until he started going to public school.
“My boy, we must appeal to your father and brother or there is not telling that Constantine will do,” he responded, his mind already trying to find a way out. There simply had to be something he could do other than watch.
Alfred couldn’t think much further than that when he heard a cry of pain. It was Danyal’s voice. He looked back to the ghostly form of a boy only to see him crying out in pain as Constantine began to do… something. A spell to banish the spirit perhaps. Alfred never put much trust in the methods of a man that once mistook Alfred for an immortal ghost that haunted the manor.
“Stop! STOP!” Zatanna pulled his arm back down, stopping the spell. Raven’s fists glowed with dark energy as she seemed to try to reverse whatever he had done. The titans were behind her, looking for guidance as their normally quick witted leader was cowering in a corner. At least that was how Alfred would have put it.
Nightwing and Master Bruce was stood against the wall with blank faces as if they had nothing to do with anything that was happening. Master Bruce was no doubt trying to figure out which side to take. Nightwing predictably was waiting for his father to make a decision. Alfred looked at his employer long and hard, trying to communicate through his eyes that this was important. He didn’t know if his attempts made any difference. Master Bruce had his thinking face on.
…
Damian could feel something inside him shift. A part of him that he never wanted to go back to. It was like being a cornered animal. Everything was out of his control. Nothing in this situation was something he could change. It was sickening. Damian felt his brain cloud over with a once familiar tingle of adrenaline, the kind of feeling he used to live in when he was a young child.
His breathing evened out, his heart rate spiking. And somehow- somehow Damian stood. It was hard and every part of his body told him to stop but he couldn’t. Not when it was this important.
Damian didn’t know what it could possibly mean for him that he was marked by Danyal but he knew that it could not warrant the things Constantine was doing. If moving in with Father had taught him anything, it was that there was no justice in punishment that didn’t fit the crime. This was not justice. This was not right.
Damian looked to Dick. Father was set in his ways but Dick had been there when he needed guidance. Damian was Dick’s Robin. Not Father’s. He had to hope that Dick would remember that enough to listen to him.
“DICK!” he shouted. The sound bounced off of whatever invisible barrier kept him and Alfred apart from everyone else. He imagined his voice was probably muffled to the outside. He would just have to yell.
Damian watched as Nightwing glanced at him, finally looking at something other than Father for the slightest second. As a Robin, you’re hard wired to follow Batman through everything even when his decisions didn’t make sense. Damian knew Dick had the worst case of it. Those two had a bond that none of the later Robins could replace. It was the same bond Damian had with Dick. Nothing quite hit the same as your first Robin. As awful as that sounded.
“Dick LOOK AT ME!” he shouted. He locked his eyes on his brother’s. He needed to keep his attention. He needed to be heard and he knew that he wasn’t going to get that unless he got Dick to really look at him.
Nightwing flinched slightly and Damian knew he could feel his eyes boring into him. The chaos of the rest of the room didn’t matter. The magic users and titans were keeping Constantine from causing any more harm for now but it didn’t matter as long as he had the permission.
He knew Dick was weak to break under pressure. Of all of his brothers, Damian knew how to make Dick crack the quickest and weakness just might be exactly what Damian needed right now.
He took a deep breath, letting himself feel the thunderous anger and fear inside him for his friend, “DICK PLEASE LOOK AT ME,” he shouted through the sob that was rising in his throat. If he could put enough of his pain in his cry, he might just be able to get him to listen.
Finally, finally, Nightwing turned his head to look at Damian. He knew he got him. Damian was so relieved, he let out a sob, his body letting out a disgusting crack under the pressure of the magic force trying to pull him back down. His brother, his Batman, was looking at him and he was gonna listen.
Damian winced the pain away to look at Dick in the eye, “Dick this isn’t right, please… let’s just talk.” Damian hated talking, he preferred to just do and explain later if he felt like it and Dick of all people was well aware of this fact. But this… this was more important than what Damian preferred at all. This was his friend on the line. This was Alfred being held to the floor while his bones were being compressed upon by a force they couldn’t see. This was Damian standing despite the incredible weight.
Pain radiated across his back as he held Dick’s gaze. Even through the Nightwing mask and white contacts, Damian could see the doubt start creeping into his face. Whatever resolve he had to follow Father was waning. He just had to keep holding on. Keep standing. He could reach his brother and make him see sense if he could just hold on-
Another loud crack echoed out as Damian felt his shoulder fall forward, dislocated. Pain shot through his neck and shoulders. He probably snapped his clavicle from fighting the pull. Then another crack. His knees buckled as one seemingly shattered.
Damian fell to the floor again, hitting the cement so hard the unfinished floor left open wounds and scratches on his knees and palms. But no matter how much pain he was in, he kept his eyes on Dick. He kept his eyes on his brother. On his Batman.
“B, get rid of Constantine. We don’t have enough information to warrant this,” he heard his akhi finally say through the ringing in his ears from the hurt running through his entire being. Damian hadn’t been in this much pain since living with his grandfather.
Damian smiled in relief before his vision went dark.
…
Alfred stood tall, his old bones cracked and broken but he could handle it. In some ways he had a higher tolerance than anyone else in the manor for that. But that wasn’t what was important right now. Constantine got dragged out of the manor by the titans when Nightwing finally gave the order, Master Bruce silent behind him. Now all that was important was helping Young Master Damian and figuring out where to go from there with Danyal.
“Alfred you should sit,” he heard his employer say.
“With all due respect sir, I’ve spent enough time on the floor,” he responded, his voice sharp and unforgiving. Instead Alfred made his way towards his friend, offering a hand to the shellshocked, ghostly boy. Nightwing was already on top of helping Young Master Damian to a bed in the cave where he could get an iv and a look over.
Silently, he felt Danyal take his hand and pull himself to a stand though he refused to look at him. It was only now that things were more calm that Alfred got to really take in what his close friend actually looked like.
Danyal couldn’t have been older than 15 in appearance. A thin boy with eyebags and hollow cheeks. He seemed to be dressed in some sort of hazmat suit that was poorly made without a helmet. The boy’s skin was pale and seemed to glow with energy that made it look as though it was nothing but mere fog. His hair was a stark white, standing unnaturally as if he were underwater. His eyes glowed with a green hue that Alfred had only ever seen on occasion in his youth. A sign of death. Alfred often saw that same green in the eyes of everyone in the manor. Even temporary death left scars behind that couldn’t be erased.
Looking at Danyal, Alfred saw a boy who was confused and lost. The snarky and confident bear he had come to know had been replaced by a hollow shell consumed in indescribable distress. It was heartbreaking to see someone he was so fond of look so… broken. He had seen it so many times, everyone in the manor had hit rock bottom before but with Danyal it seemed to seep into everything about him. His entire form looked beaten. Even his glow looked sad.
“Danyal, are you okay,” he asked softly, ignoring the eyes of his employer staring into the back of his head.
The ghostly boy before him looked up at Alfred, his eyes taking time to focus, “Who am I…”
Alfred sighed, sorrow seeping into his old, broken bones, “We can figure that out together my friend.”
