I think I am not a person that cries often. I can count with one hand the times I have cried in a year.
It had been a while since I had any "fight" with my Dad, ever since I live by my own and I guess he was doing a great effort not to waste the days we got to be together.
So my Dad makes me cry but not just that, not just cry but sob. It doesn't even matter what the argument was about but it's always what he does after.
He is always a loving Dad, until he is not. When he gets mad at me I feel that he really hates me, and I feel fear inside. I feel that he is going to abandon me. Then he also gets mad at my mom when she didn't do anything in the first place.
The new year plans, cancelled, ruined for me and my mom just because he didn't feel like it, we had a normal lunch and then he resumed being mad and we spent the time at the hotel room doing nothing. And they left the next day.
I feel mad or sad or both because this is not fair.
And my mom had bought a present for him, just fancy chocolates that she saw in a store, but she was happy when she bought them. She said "I think your Dad will like this" and smiled. She gave it to him and he seemed to be grateful for it.
Then the next day when they leave before me and I go back to the hotel room, there is only my stuff left, and I see next to the coffee machine the fancy chocolates my mom gave to him. They were actually hidden next to the machine. They were hidden because he didn't forget them, he left them there on purpose. Not valuing my mom's gift, rejecting it. What did she even do? The argument was with me.
I saw that and I instantly felt something like anger rising inside of me and all I could said was "goddammit". Or something like that, in spanish. I started pacing around the room. Then I couldn't identify exactly what emotion I was feeling, all I could think over and over is him rejecting her gift and her love, and for what. For his pride? He is there rejecting her gifts and her love, when he is lucky she has never left him. He didn't see how she was happy when she bought it and said "your Dad will like this"
I couldn't understand why, but then I covered my face with my hands and started crying, then sobbing. Even silently screaming. And more desperate sobbing, and screaming. Oh, this has happened many times. It just hadn't happened in a while. Anger or sadness? Both? Maybe.
I kept thinking and thinking, why do I feel like that. Until finally a word came to my mind. Cruelty.
