#RuppertStadium opened in 1926 at 258 Wilson Avenue in #Newark, NJ and was home to the #NewYorkYankees minor league affiliate, the #NewarkBears and the #NegroLeagues #NewarkEagles. Unfortunately, it was torn down in 1967 and the industrial park you see in the photos is what stands there now. In fact, though 257 Wilson Avenue exists across the street, the building where Ruppert Stadium stood is now 280 Wilson Avenue. In 1999, a beautiful new #ballpark opened in downtown Newark and was home to the new independent league version of the Newark Bears. In fact, in honor of the Bears and Eagles of old, the new park was named #BearsandEaglesRiverfrontStadium. Well, it didn’t last long, which is quite a shame because it was a fun place and I got to see #RickeyHenderson play for the Bears in 2004 there. That stadium was demolished last year and all that remains is a sign and the “405 Feet” marker on the side of the parking garage that was beyond the outfield wall. Sadly, that’s probably the last we’ll see of professional #baseball in a city steeped in the game’s history. ⚾️ (at Newark, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDu1uI9Bd-z/?igshid=1ie5eh7wnp8va
The Life... Two seasons ago, I attended a Newark Bears spring training game. From the season before and that one, I probably attended well over 200 games combined. If I could, I would spend everyday and every night at a baseball game somewhere.
