Our group's final project in African-American Concert Dance! "Devolve to Evolve" gives a fresh opinion on the question: "What is New Black Dance?"
Our definition: "New Black Dance" IS dance; is expression; is communicative; is rebellious; is love for self and others. "New Black Dance" remembers the essence of "Old Black Dance" - rhythm has carried "New Black Dance" through time into the future, allowing it to be a tool for empowerment and to fluidly mix with non-"black" movement. In fact, "New Black Dance" ain't new and ain't only "black". "New Black Dance" is the freedom of MOVEMENT--the movement of our bodies, of our minds and of our souls as we look towards an era of cross-cultural harmony.
