DAY 11: Puddle by Chon

Very much newcomers to the game, San Diego based math metal band Chon stole my heart from the moment I heard them open during Periphery’s Sonic Unrest tour. They certainly did not sound like any other band that played that night. Chon fundamentally have many similar qualities to their musically metal brethren as far as composition and song structure, but there seems to be more of a...I don’t know quite how to describe it. A bounce? A swing? A groove? I think that’s the one. Chon is just straight up a groovy band. I’d hate to come off as pretentious or snooty, but my musical taste craves flavors that are more complex, different time signatures and tempos that keep the palate fresh even throughout the same meal each song uniquely provides. Puddle is the opening track (not counting a 40 second intro song) from their first independently released album Newborn Sun, and although I enjoy every song off the album, there’s an energy to Puddle that isn’t quite eclipsed by any of the other tracks to follow. It makes you want to sway your body, feel good, nod your head, or all of the above! I especially enjoy the call-and-response type riffs between guitarists Mario Camarena and Erick Hansel, while Mario’s brother Nathan on drums consistently lays down the beats, providing a sort of backbone for the track to follow along with. Recently, Chon has gained notoriety among record labels, signing with Sumerian Records in December 2014 and having since released two albums. While there are a few Chon songs with lyrics, I feel the band is at their best when instrumental, as the chemistry between all 4 members seems to flow at its highest when honed in on their primary instruments. That being said, Newborn Sun is purely instrumental and is less than a 20 minute listen from beginning to end, I would highly recommend listening to the entire album. But if you’re in a pinch...I guess Puddle will do.
