As we continue our Women in Horror Month, we venture into the realm of the New French Extremity, and its progeny: this week we're looking at Claire Denis' Trouble Every Day versus Julia Ducournau's directorial debut, Raw. Both films tackle cannibalistic urges in conjunction with sexual awakening, loss of virginity, or passion and desire. We're discussing these two depictions of the ferocity of female sexuality as something we're taught to hide away, keep behind closed doors, and even to be ashamed of - but something that always gets unleashed, and what happens when it does.⠀ ⠀ Much of our research this week came from Alexandra West's amazing book Films of the New French Extremity: Visceral Horror and National Identity which can be found on Amazon and Google Books.⠀ ⠀ During the month, be sure to take a look at Ariel's (Afis8) Letterboxd list of female-directed horror films. It's at 136 right now - let's make those numbers climb! Send us a message or email with any suggestions not already on the list!⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #Podcast #PodernFamily #Podcasts #Podcasting #Podcasters #LadyPodSquad #InternetRadio #Raw #TroubleEveryDay #ClaireDenis #JuliaDucournau #NewFrenchExtremity #Horror #Cannibalism #Feminism #FemaleSexuality #Love #Boss
Today at http://psychodrivein.com Sick Flix: Inside (2007) Inside is a film in which the very concept is enough to make most people’s skin crawl. That alone makes it a must see for Extreme Cinema fans, but the most important question is still “is there substance beneath the surface”? --- Read more of Corin's article at the link in our profile! #sickflix #inside #alinterieur #newfrenchextremity #extremehorror #horror #frenchhorror

Mexican Cult Horror
Aptly named, Santa Sangre (‘Holy Blood’) is a late 1980s Mexican / Italian psychedelic thriller. It's directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky (a surrealist filmmaker, mystic and comic) with Claudio Argento, the kid brother of horror deity Dario Argento.
Eclipsing classic murder mystery horror, Santa Sangre digs deep into the depths of human iniquity. Rape, mutilation, revenge and mental illness are heightened by the disturbing circus environment in which the main character, Fenix, is raised. From a protracted scene of the young boy’s agony as a large phoenix tattoo is carved into his chest, to the bizarre Oedipal relationship with his mother, Santa Sangre is particularly disconcerting because it is narrated from the perspective of a child.
Much of the film lurches through kaleidoscopic flashbacks, and everything is fair game for Jodorowsky’s hallucinatory lens. One very disturbing scenes involves a large group of children with Down Syndrome doing blow before visiting an obese prostitute. Haunting mariachi music and traditional Mexican iconography set the backdrop, peppered with hypnotism, cultism, and a crazy amount of blood. Weighted by dark religious and sexual undertones, and filmed with torrid reds reminiscent of its genre, this one takes a strong stomach to handle.
