Stranded on A Desert Island/Innocent Physical Contact
ok gonna try to do an actual shorty this time!
Harry has been stranded on a desert island for several years after a plane crash that left him as the only survivor. He’s made a life for himself, finding shelter in a cave at first and then learning how to build something more appropriate as time went on. He’s lucky to have been studying biology, focusing in botany and with a personal interest in mycology-- it’s kept him from eating plants that could’ve made him sick and helped him find medicinal plants when he was first recovering after the crash, and he’s gotten along pretty well all things considered. Of course he still dreams of being rescued.
Louis arrives by row boat, having slipped away from a cruise ship where he was being targeted for murder. He’s the heir to hefty fortune that his uncle wants to keep for himself, and though he has very few survival skills he does realize that his best bet for staying alive was leaving that boat. When he hits land, he’s suffering from heat exhaustion, and barely manages to drag the boat ashore before collapsing in the shade. He wakes up face to face with Harry, and after some shouting and confusion, they figure they might as well help one another.
Of course neither of them trusts the other completely and both think they’re right about everything. They fight a lot, especially in the beginning, but soon enough they grow closer. Harry respects Louis’ tenacity and his faith that things will improve, and Louis recognizes that Harry is not only a great survivalist, he’s also passionate and compassionate. And...pretty hot? Wow.
So Louis starts thinking that maybe they should try having sex, since they’re going to be alone on this island, maybe for a really long time. He’s not sure how Harry feels, though, so he starts trying to just add in some casual touches. Soon he realizes that Harry goes out of his way not to be touched and never returns touches at all. The more he observes it, the more he wonders about it-- was Harry always like this? Is he disgusted by Louis in particular? --but he isn’t sure how to broach it.
Then one day Harry gets bitten/stung by an insect and is in desperate need of a particular medicinal plant. He tells Louis how and where to find it, and Louis runs off to get it. When he returns, Harry is almost passed out. He touches Harry’s face gently and Harry’s eyes open wide until he sees Louis. He explains that Louis will have to chew the bitter leaves and massage them into the bite regularly for at least a whole day.
Of course Louis does it while Harry drifts in and out of consciousness. He’s touching Harry a lot during this time-- feeling his head to see if he’s feverish, rubbing the plant into his wound, lifting his head so he can sip water and wiping it off his chin when it dribbles down --and he’s desperate to actually talk to Harry to understand if this will change things between them.
When Harry starts healing and regains consciousness, he flinches away while Louis is trying to apply more medicine, and Louis’ confusion and frustration boil over. He confronts Harry to find out why even innocent touches bother him, and Harry admits that his parents weren’t physically affectionate, and then when he was stranded he’d never had close friends or been in a relationship. Touching feels foreign to him, and he simply doesn’t know how to react.
Louis asks if he wants to be that way or if it’s something he’d like to change, and Harry admits he really doesn’t know. He agrees to let Louis touch him at certain times and in certain ways, slowly testing the waters to see what touches he enjoys and what he doesn’t. Things are actually going pretty well when they’re rescued.
Almost immediately they’re torn apart from one another-- Harry is British and Louis is American, and Louis is swept up into legal battles over his money and murderous uncle while other biologists descend upon Harry immediately to get details about the plant life he encountered on this island. It’s a month before they’re able to get in touch with one another and plan a visit, and Louis realizes how much he’s missed Harry, but he’s scared that Harry won’t have missed him, emotionally or physically, and he’s terrified that he’s possibly fallen in love with someone who has no desire to love him back.
He meets Harry at the airport and he’s holding a sign for him and Harry’s favorite plant (which is some medicinal flowering plant that’s beautiful but useful, idk I’d research that) and Harry smiles at him when he comes into view, and he’s walking toward Louis with long strides, and when he gets there Louis isn’t sure what to do, but Harry reaches out his hand and touches Louis’ cheek so gently and he’s never initiated touch before, so obviously Louis starts crying, because DAMN, maybe Harry does love him??
So Louis reaches out and tentatively touches Harry’s shoulder, sliding his hand down to Harry’s elbow and then to his waist, and he pulls him in for a hug so slowly and carefully until they’re chest to chest, the plant still in one of Louis’ hands and both arms wrapped around one another. Louis confesses his love and Harry says he feels the same way, and since it’s me that slow burn would end with them holding hands and walking into the sunset!!
Aren’t you glad I don’t write fic like that?? Like what kind of absolute fucker writes what would probably be at least 40k of slow burn and angst where the emotional payoff is in the last bit and it’s...not even a fucking kiss??? They HUGGED????
