“I never made one of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking.” - Albert Einstein
Einstein alludes to the irrational mind as a vehicle for innovation and creativity. Logic may not be the catalyst to thinking abstractly. Maybe its those gut instincts to risk, chance, and experiment, which fuels ideas, to try something new, and discover. Perhaps, emotion is the root of creativity. We have all been at the crossroads where we have to decided between what our mind tells us and our heart. At one point or another, regardless of what our minds tell us, we trust our gut. Even though we cannot always explain it, we believe in it.
Someone wise once told me: To capture someone's mind, you must first have their heart.
Emotional impact is a huge aspect of what we do as designers. The design community needs to incorporate emotional literacy in its education.
As designers, we do not generate new knowledge or test an scientific research. According to Tim Brown, the mission of design thinking is to translate observations into insights and then those insights into products or service that will improve lives. Essentially, we connect with people. We do this through observation and this mental ability to known as empathy. (Brown, 49)
Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself experiencing what another person is feeling; to see what they see and feel what they feel. (Pink, 159)
The ability to express and control one’s own emotions, as well as the ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others, is considered to be more important to some experts than IQ. This ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions is referred to by psychologists as emotional intelligence.
