I do think my new year gnome is finished. You know I couldn’t let my students have all the fun. This guy is made from baby bel cheese wax and holds the all important dum dum. He is kinda the perfect mascot for me as I eat baby bel cheese and give out dum dums to my students. Round two of hanging with my gnomies in ceramics class. The teenagers have made their signature stamps, texture stamps, texture rollers, gnomes and recycled 1/2 pound of clay for use next week. It was very successful week and I can’t wait to see how they tackle their pinch pots. Side note: the reason I had them recycle a half pound of clay was so that they could see how they can keep and return clay to a workable state. The clay they got wasn’t dried out completely but at that stage where it was unworkable. They will make their first pinch pot out of they clay and then smash it. The new semester is underway and I’m having all kinds of fun in the classroom. I decide since it’s a new year that as a fun side project my students could make a #newyeargnome. I let them look @kindnuggets and @newyearsgnome for some inspiration into the silliness behind it and then I stepped back. I will say I’m impressed so far with how good they are especially since this is only the 6 day of class and only the 4th day they have had their hands jn clay. So @mikefx has a new year gnome challenge. I accepted because why not, and it’s been a nice break from the big pieces. I still have a ways to go on this guy. If I like the final finish I’ll even explore making a silicone mold and casting some resin. Now that is something I haven’t done in 20 years. Early in my sculpture career I worked for David Johnson Studio in Norcross, Georgia. It was a studio that specialized in cold casting. I learned a ton while working there and one of my last projects was a 15 foot tall mold of a bent pine tree. Let me tell you applying rubber and a fiberglass mother mold while on a ladder was an interesting experience.
