Interestingly, the Empire State Building struggled financially for many years after opening. In fact, there was fear that the whole Empire State project would be a grand flop after completion. Of course, the USA was going through the Great Depression at that time, and the Empire State Building had a tough time attracting tenants. The New York press dubbed this great building the "Empty State Building" for a few years. The only thing this building seemed to be good at was attracting tourists and giant gorillas with damsels in distress. Thankfully, the Empire State Building started attracting tenants in the 1950s, and today it has numerous big name tenants from around the world. Just a few companies with offices in the Empire State Building today include Air China, Qatar Airways, the Boy Scouts of America, and LinkedIn. The Empire State Building was formally recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1986, and you can still visit the famous outdoor observatory on the 102nd floor.
