Dangerous Liaisons Teaser
Coming up in the next chapter :)
Thunderous silence falls between us, as Eric’s face immediately shifts to an unreadable, stoic mask. His jaw clenches, as ice begins to form in his eyes. My heart beats faster, my palms growing damp.
“Really? That’s what you want to talk about right now?” He sneers, abruptly pushing himself off the floor. Sitting up, I watch him stomp over to the counter and pick up his jacket. Angrily yanking his cigarettes out of the pocket, he makes his way to the door. Flinging it open, he stands in the doorway, with his back turned to me.
Looking out past the field beyond the porch, he puffs on his cigarette. Taking a deep breath, I decide the damage has already been done, and I might as well keep going. This is something we need to get past, and we can’t do that if we don’t talk about it.
I need to know, if only for me.
Pulling his shirt over me, I hug it to my body as I quietly make my way toward him. His head shifts as I get near, but he still doesn’t turn. His anger radiates from his posture, as I stop just behind him. Sighing, I lean into the doorframe. As I’m trying to figure out how to broach the issue again without a massive fight, he finally turns.
“Why is it that whenever things are actually okay with us, you are bound and determined to fuck it up?”
“Eric, that’s not what-“
“Yes, it fucking is! You were just fucking me, and that’s what you were thinking about?”
“Eric, listen to me-“
“Fucking save it, Jade.”
I can’t get a word in edgewise. As I open my mouth to protest again, Eric moves back inside, slamming the door to the cottage so hard it rattles. The flames from the fireplace dance angrily across the bare skin of his chest, as he glowers into the burning pile. Licking my dry lips, I make my way toward him again.
“Listen to me,” I demand in a quiet, firm voice. He keeps looking at the fire, visibly trying to keep his calm. Hugging myself a little more tightly, I cross my arms and try again.
“Eric…I’m not trying to fuck up or ruin anything. Quite the opposite, in fact. I’m sick of this being an issue…a still unresolved issue. We’ve already done the fighting part about it, and I conceded that I was wrong. But the question still remains, that I’m asking you to answer so we can get past it. I just want to understand…” Pausing, I second guess if I really want to know this. Pushing my hesitation aside, I repeat myself softly.
“Why didn’t you tell me about Ayden?”
Chapter 2.2 teaser [Ancora]
“What is your name?” Liliana finally asked. “I want you to tell me.” The voice replied in an almost pained tone. “You always say that. But how? What do you mean? Do you want me to name you?” “I have many names. I want you to find the one that resonates with you. I want you to find me in your heart, in the very core of your existence, and I want you to recognize me. When you can do that, you will know my name.” Liliana’s brows twitched a bit as she stared blankly at the fabric of the backrest of the couch. She curled herself into a ball. Yet another hurdle in her journey. Another struggle, another riddle, another thing she alone had to resolve. She was so sick of it all. “Are you in me?” “Yes and no.” The frustration was audible in the voice, “I can’t really explain this, Liliana. You feel me, and I feel you. Our emotions ebb and flow from one to the other and back around. We are connected, but I can’t really tell you how or why. You have to figure it out yourself.” “Why?” “Because…” “Bullshit!” Liliana spat out, closing her eyes tight. “I’m sick of the cryptic answers! You used to teach me things. You helped me in my darkest moments. You were my guiding light when I had nothing left to hold on to, and even knowing you may be a harmful entity I just took your advice. I’ve trusted this much. Why can’t you trust me with a straight answer now?” “I’m sorry, Liliana. I’m afraid I have to ask you to trust me once again.” The words gave her goosebumps as a chill ran up her spine. She curled up tighter, a tear escaping her closed eyes. Last time the voice said that her mother died. “Why should I? Why now? I’ve faced death before but I just…” “The next step of this journey is my arrival. Things will start making sense then. I promise. I know how this story goes, I’ve read it all the way to the end. All you have to do is trust me.” The voice begged. Liliana took a deep breath. The events of the day were pushing on the edges of her mind. The loss of Ritz, the fact she murdered two people, the fact she was certain her time was up, the fact she broke her seal and unleashed the forbidden attunement. It all began to weigh heavily in her mind and she was way too tired to hold on much longer. “I’m scared, Amalthea.” Liliana sobbed. She felt a low rumble, the whole room shaking. As quickly as it arrived it was gone. She sat up startled, looking about. The chandeliers swayed gently, but she immediately assumed it was just her exhaustion. “Sleep, Liliana.” The voice whispered in a soothing, smiling tone. “Mmm…” Liliana laid back down, getting comfortable, her body feeling heavy as every muscle relaxed. In a matter of seconds she was drifting off to a dreamless slumber. -----
