Second tomato bed is done! I received these seeds during the Heinz factory tour during the California Veggie trials last summer 🍅 Ready to watch them grow! #ngbplantnerds

I really enjoyed getting an up close look at the 2017 @aasgardenwinners ornamental seed trials. Filled with everything from ornamental corn to the prettiest marigolds I've ever seen. The zinnias were so colorful and vibrant & I'm pretty sure the ptilotus is everyone's new favorite! Here are just some of the snapshots from that amazing day. • • • #ngbplantnerds #veggietrial #veggietrials (at Salinas, California)
During the Sakata AAS trials, we visited the cold weather crops is Salinas, California. The first photo shows the brightly colored Swiss chard 'Celebration'. We tasted the 'Touchstone Gold' beet that has a mild and sweet flavor. I didn't even know I liked beets! It really did taste like candy. The fields filled with broccoli & greens are beautiful. This area in CA has the perfect climate with a constantly cool temp to encourage these plants to have a strong performance! The cauliflower that will be a future introduction has dense heavy curds for high yields. You can see that the 'Avenger' broccoli allows for a high percentage of crown cuts. 'Southern Giant' curled greens are slow to bolt with a mustard taste. Can't wait to add these varieties to my own vegetable garden. ❄️🌱#ngbplantnerds #veggietrials
During the California vegetable trials we met up with ASTA (American Seed Trade Association) at UC Davis. We toured the seed biotechnology center and research plots. We learned about gene editing, breeding plants for virus resistance and mechanical harvesting. In order to strengthen a plant, you have to find it’s weaknesses. We were lucky enough to see the gathering methods of the lygus bug. The lygus bug is enemy number 1 to beans, cotton, strawberries and alfalfa. In California alone, this bug can cause 30 million dollars in damage to cotton plants each year. You can determine the number of bugs using a standard insect sweeping net. I personally prefer the Ghostbusters looking, bug hunting machine! It’s fascinating learning about breeding beans for lygus resistance and improving the plants tolerance to the bug. #ngbplantnerds (at UC Davis)
August has been such an incredible month! Throwing it back to when us #ngbplantnerds visited Heinz Seed in Stockton, CA. We learned about breeding for the global industry, selection and how it impacts the supply chain, tomato variety development, the production cycle of the seeds and more. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at the seed inventory and the growing process was fascinating! I definitely have a new perspective and immense respect for all of the work that goes into making the ketchup sitting inside my fridge right now! 🍅 #veggietrials (at Heinz Seeds)
I thought these ptilotus flowers featured in the @aasgardenwinners 2017 ornamental seed trial! Such a unique looking plant 💜#ngbplantnerds #sakatahomegrown (at Sakata Seed America)
