Interview with Aaron Draplin // by Austin Williams
Recently the designer Aaron Draplin paid a visit to NHIA for an artist talk and workshop. This was a pretty big deal for NHIA and a great experience for the students. While he was here, I got the chance to interview Aaron. Before I get into that, let's talk a bit about Aaron himself. Who is he and why is he such a big deal? Well if you were to ask him, he'd probably tell you he's just another guy, but that's only half true. Sure he is a normal person, and Aaron Draplin began as a simple graphic designer creating layouts for snowboarding magazines, but eventually he pursued bigger dreams, which eventually lead to the success of his own design company and big name clients such as Nike, Burton.
I had many questions for Aaron Draplin, but out of all of them these to be the best questions with the best answers.
Since you are on the road, traveling, what has anything inspired you?
“Signs. They change from place to place and they are specific to where they are. Like you go to Maine and there are signs that work well just for Maine, but when you get to New Hampshire, they change a little bit to accommodate for that area.” Aaron explained that those simple little things in design that help get a message across better are what inspire him the most while traveling this past year.
What advice would you give to students trying to find their style?
“You have to be careful with all the latest trends and things like that. In a weird way, I have become a trend maker, and while it's fine for people to admire my work, I see them often going after what I do, but all of those ideas and styles were based off of my own reactions.” Aaron explained that most people who are trying to find their style gravitate more to keeping up with trends, but those trends are only here today and gone tomorrow. Over all, these trends are not your own. “Figure out what you like the make and let that be the start,” says Draplin.
Why is design, in your eye, so important?
“Because design can make something complex simple. Everything from customs forms to street signs and directions on maps. Without good design these everyday facts of life would be so much harder. Good design helps make it easier.” Just look at subway train maps and directions, they’re designs are color coded, simple, and laid out nicely so they can be read within a second. If they were designed poorly, they would be harder to read and people wouldn't be able to get anywhere efficiently. This logic goes for all design, not just directions, but everything from forms and contracts, to ads and logos.
Design is important for many reasons, but over all, because it can make the world and everyday life easier to deal with. Style comes from what you love, not what others want. The trend that's “in” should be whatever makes you happy, and sometimes inspiration can be something as small as a road sign.
