Gilles Meloche Stops 55 of 58 in 1973 vs Rangers
On January 31, 1973, Gilles Meloche made 55 saves on 58 shots against the New York Rangers in a 3-1 loss at Madison Square Garden. Despite playing for the lowly California Golden Seals, Meloche regularly faced massive shot totals, 14 times facing 40 or more in 1972-73 alone. He led the NHL in shots against, saves, and minutes that season, yet never received MVP consideration. One of the NHL’s unsung goaltending warriors of the 1970s.
