90: talk about your one of you favorite cities.
oooh my favorite cities. one of my favorite places is tahoe which i realize is a region but lets talk about it.
First off for anyone not around california, lake tahoe is huge. just google it and its that big blue blob between nevada and calif. not so huge that like, you cant see the mountains on the opposite shore, but huge enough that it feels like a massive expanse of water not just some random mountain lake. it sits right in this basin that a glacier probably made 40000 years ago. and on the west and south sides are lots of mtn peaks –> lots of skiing. to the east, is nevada, and as soon as you go down the mountain towards reno you find yourself in a mountain desert. so like a desert, but at 5000 feet. flat and not a lot of vegetation other than tumbleweeds. like zero trees. super boring (sorry nevadans)
back to tahoe. tahoe is all evergreen forest so it is gorgeous whether you go in summer or winter. summer is actually my favorite time to go, because its hot down here in the valley and perfect up there: nice in the day and cool at night, but not so cold you need coats. i have done a lot of camping, and my favorite campgrounds are nevada beach (which yes is on a beach and yes is in nevada, by about ½ a mile lol) in south lake tahoe, then william kent where i went last summer which is in the middle of the west shore. for both its a quick walk to the lake, or to a grocery store, so you’re not removed from civilization, but it feels like it when you’re in the campground cause you only see trees. but if you want a coke or a coffee you can go get one too.
so tahoe has north shore (truckee, northstar resort, donner lake) and south shore (casinos). south lake tahoe is split in half, w/half in california and half in nevada. gambling is legal in nevada so as soon as you cross the state line (which isnt anything fancy, its literally just a sign at a stoplight), you’re flanked by casinos on both sides. idk if they are any ‘good’, but theyre still in business so people must go there. there are a lot more casinos in reno and of course in vegas which is the mecca for that.
then there is emerald bay which is kind of at about 7 oclock if you look at tahoe like a clock, and its this beautiful inlet which is literally green. thats another thing about tahoe, the water is crystal clear, like as clear as the atlantic in the caribbean or the florida keys. but it is a mountain lake, which is not common. usually mountain lake water is clear but the bottom is murky dirt so the water is kinda too. but not tahoe. and over in emerald bay, the water is this beautiful greenblue color and truly emeraldy, which the rest of the lake is just blue.
the beaches vary, there are rocky ones, then there are some sandy ones. which are more popular. thats why i like nevada beach, because its a sandy beach. its a thick grit sand, as if someone put a rock in a blender, not a fine white powder. plus, since its on the east shore you get amazing sunsets. example:
if you go to tahoe in the winter, traffic can be a mess bc of skiing. i dont ski or snowboard, so ive only gone to hang out and stuff. snow is so pretty to me. i know northeastern usa people are probably like .. no! snow is a bitch! but its a total novelty for me and i love seeing the snow covered trees in the wintertime, the snowy rocks, the snow bridges, the icicles hanging off the roofs.
here are some pictures from my social media. when i die, scatter my ashes across the lake (if it’s legal) or something.
this is from the east side, this is near sand harbor, nv, which is this random sandy inlet surrounded by rocks. super pretty. but u have to get there at like 9am for parking or you’re SOL, cause there isnt any on the highway.
this is the campground at nevada beach… you’re in a forest.. the lake is right there. these sites are sooo hard to get.
and here’s a sunset from nevada beach
i know this is long! i dont care! this place is beautiful!
this is west shore, at sugar pine point state park. look!! at !!! the!!! water!!
last here is one from this summer, this is from the west shore. the sky was purple but this was my old phone and it didnt really portray that.
and then winter, from my trip this past january. this was a bike path my friend and i went on a walk on to walk off chips and dip lol
this is the truckee river
thanks for reading! hope you liked the pics! not sorry for the essay! i love tahoe!
