I read something today that apparently Zhao Liying had a hard time filming New Huan Zhu Ge Ge because Qing Er was actually the third role she auditioned for – she auditioned first for both Xiao Yan Zi and Zi Wei and Qiong Yao rejected her both times because Qiong Yao didn’t think she was pretty enough?!! And was unhappy with her eventual casting as Qing Er to the point that (as the tea goes) filming the drama was a miserable experience for Zhao Liying.

And I’m just like…looks-wise, Qing Er was literally the only person on that entire main cast that I thought looked appropriate to the role.

If there was anything wrong with her looks, it would be the horrendous late 2000s modern make up style with overuse of gaudy eyeshadow and pink shiny candy lipgloss. And this went for all the girls not just Qing Er.

Ok for some reason, my algorithms put into my path the scene of Yong Qi meeting Zi Wei for the first time but in the 2011 remake the other day. And also for some reason I watched it (rip my feed now) and got reminded of how hilarious that scene actually was.

Because I stg there was literal swelling romantic background music playing over the whole scene while he stares her up and down.

If you just saw that scene in isolation, you'd think this is love at first sight.

This is Yong Qi meeting Zi Wei.

I'm reminded now of how the music took me so much the f out of the scene that this was the point where I gave up on giving this drama any more benefit of the doubt and just started spite watching.

Like, honestly, looking back I'd acknowledge that Alec Su actually also had great romantic chemistry with Ruby Lin in all the other dramas where they play a couple, and even then the original scene of Yong Qi meeting Zi Wei wasn't scored to be romantic.
