Ok so I was reading your putting others first analysis and watching the video along side it and at 24 34 when Roman says that Patton should take the wheel Patton lets out a tiny and almost scared 'no' and after my heart broke I had a thought. What if he was scared that Roman was letting him take full control? Because he's been activly involving Roman and asking for his input and doesn't want to be too strict. Idk, what do you think??

​That's a very interesting thought!​ I also think Patton was scared to take full control. But not just because he didn't want to be too strict: because he had no idea of what he was doing.

Let's consider the situation: it was getting worse every minute. The more Patton talked, the worst the situation became. He tried to justify his choices in every possible way. He asked for Roman's help, but Roman never opposed him, so he gave Patton zero real help. Patton was trying to not be too strict but, at the same time, he wanted to be "the one with answers" Thomas needed. As he said in the end:

[Patton]: I said to myself, "Alright Patton. Thomas needs you. You're responsible for his morality. You can never not have an answer for him." And then I promised you I'd keep fighting.

So it would only make sense that Patton is freaking scared. His every word is wrong, the tension is growing and then Roman tells him he should take the wheel?! When he has no idea of what he's doing?!

In addition to that, there's another thing: Patton doesn't need to take the wheel to have control over Thomas' life, because he's already the side who has the biggest influence over him.

And not because Patton is a manipulator or something like that, but because he's the embodiment of Thomas' freakin' Morality, his heart and a huge part of his emotions - three pretty important things. It would only make sense he has a big influence over Thomas' life.

(And Patton's also the foundation of Roman's existence, so, again he plays a huge role already.)

So Patton didn't need to take the wheel, because he already is in the driver's seat - although indirectly.

And he didn't need more power either: he needed someone strong enough to oppose him, to show him a different vision of the world and especially to take some of those responsibilities off his back.
