Name Origin Meme :: Daeyona
Full Name: Daeyona Zandel (Formerly “Roaring Thunder”)
Pronunciation: day-YO-nah ZAN-dell
(And her former name is pronounced exactly how it looks!)
Her Name Means: Her current name doesn’t have too much hidden meaning to it; she was, at one point after being exiled and during her travel to Limsa, assisted by a Lalafell couple who just went by the names “Yona” and “Zann”, and the out-of-nowhere kindness struck her enough that she slipped both their names into her new one. The extra syllables were just an aesthetic addition to make the name more distinctly “hers”.
(As for her former name: it means exactly what it looks like it does!)
She Was Named Because: She could not stand the negative associations she had with her old name and the bad memories attached to it, particularly with regards to (most of) her family. So when she finally made it to Limsa—at her uncle’s recommendation, just before she was thrown out of the village for good—she took the opportunity to rename herself and try to start over again.
(And with her old name, all of the women on her mother’s side of the family had somewhat more “violent”-sounding names than female Hellsguard tended to have, due to their distinct tendency towards being berserkers. It was simply a pattern that extended to her, too.)
Nickname(s) And Why She Has Them: The most notable nickname she has is simply “Dae”. She has it mainly because her friends seemed to like shortening her name to that specifically, and she enjoyed that they felt familiar enough with her to do so. So she never did stop them from calling her by the name.
(Her uncle Rys also sometimes calls her “Thunder”. But this is a nickname that only said uncle gets away with using.)
Birth Date And Star Sign: The 23rd Sun of the 3rd Umbral Moon, roughly 30-ish years ago from the present day. I ain’t playin’ with this game’s wonky timeline so sue me She considers her deity to be Halone, and her IRL “star sign” would be Cancer.
