I finished City the Animation a few days ago with my friend.
This show is incredible!
I had watched Nichijou beforehand for the first time with the same friend. Both shows are written by the same person, Keiichi Awari. Nichijou is popular and well known, you should watch it.
But I don't know how big the City anime ever got. Nichijou is funnier no doubt, and it has more appeal because of that. City makes up for it's less comedic moments with a comfy cozy happy vibe that I really latched onto.
I enjoyed City more over all and wish the anime just kept going.
This show just breathes silly stupid happy fun. The characters are all fucking lovable idiots and the art style appeals to me greatly. The humor may not always land as often as Nichijou, but that's about the only real negative thing I can say about it.
It also has an episode that I would put in my top anime episodes if I ever made such a list someday. It was so refreshing to watch this silly show about life in this city in a sea of light novel power fantasy anime.
Something light and refreshing with just a touch of sadness to really hit hard. It's not cynical or edgy or trying to present some deep profound storytelling.
If you give a shit about anime at all you owe it to yourself to watch this. This is the kind of anime I want more of.
