I’ve finally finished baccano after more than a year since I started 😭 what a ride! I’ll definitely try to also read the light novels, though I’m not sure when I’ll be able to. The anime is too short and hopefully it’ll get a proper remake someday. My favorite characters right now are probably:
I don’t really have a particular attachment towards him rn but I do find him interesting and I wish we could’ve seen more of him.
He was alright most of the time but the story of why he got the tattoo on his face did it for me 🥲 it was kind of silly but also really sweet.
To me it feels a bit like if the essence of baccano were to be condensed into just one character it may turn out to be somewhat like him. Depending on who he’s facing he can either be very fun and charming or be about one of the most horrible ever. I imagine sometimes he can be both at the same time, or somewhere in between, or something more. Maybe at times he’s neither. A bit like a human Russian roulette? He’s a little unhinged and I find him kind of unsettling but I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him.
7. President of the daily days
Since I’ve only seen the anime I’m so curious about whether or not his identity has been revealed in the light novels. How does he know about so many things before his employees even get to report them to him? How did he even become the president of the daily days at a relatively young age (he doesn’t sound very old to me)? Is there a specific reason for why he’s been hidden the whole time, but was able to casually reveal his appearance for just a sugar cube?
I would probably still be able to enjoy baccano even if what’s left are just him and his thoughts. I’m also so curious about why he never seems to be at the office of the daily days. At least in the anime I don’t think he ever had a direct interaction with any of the other employees besides carol. Not even once, even though he’s the vice president? They’ve never even been in the same frame, I don’t think? I think their interactions would be very interesting to see, especially one between him and the president.
Seems to me like he mostly just feeds his own curiosity and then goes with the flow, and he may or may not be really human. Very intriguing.
I mean it’s Ladd. The Ladd Russo. He’s a whole show on his own. Just really fun to watch.
3. And 2. Isaac and miria
I didn’t want to cheat by saying Isaac and Miria come as a pair so they can both occupy the same rank, and I didn’t think it would’ve been really fair to them either anyway since I think I’d still really like them even if they stopped appearing as a duo. The reason I still put them as 3 and 2 together though is I really can’t choose between the two of them. Maybe if they somehow separate in the light novels then I’ll think about it again, but they really are so much fun together. They just make everything brighter and better.
Honestly I didn’t expect to like him so much. I can’t really explain it but to put it very simply, out of all of the characters somehow I find him to be the most intriguing one. Obviously with a show like baccano this is saying something. One thing that I will be able to point out though, is that he didn’t apologize to eve for what he and his brothers had done to Dallas. I’m not at all saying that what he did was good or right, just that I prefer the mindset over not having a clear boundary between the inside and the outside if that makes sense. I think this was actually the moment that made me really like him. And he wasn’t even rude about it. He stated the facts calmly but firmly, made his intentions clear, owned up to his actions, and then expressed sympathy for the pain that they had caused. Whether or not it was sincere can be argued, but it seemed pretty genuine to me. At the very least he handled it in a mature and I would say responsible manner, and without losing himself.
And that’s about it for now. Narita is a genius.
