SGU - Watching for the first time
I’ve been a Stargate fan for a few years now, but had only watched SG-1 until recently. Went old-school half way through watching Atlantis after Netflix took it off their listings, got some DVD’s to finish it, and I wanted to watch all the extra interviews, behind the scenes glorious-ness. I also picked up the SGU seasons, having enjoyed the floof and sexiness that is Mr Gold/Rumplestiltskin, hoping to enjoy more screen time from Robert Carlyle.
Now, I’m only part-way through Season 1, but there is such limited effective screen time for our main man. I’m so over the ‘loser wants the pretty girl, but is friend-zoned’ story-line of Eli, there was nothing wrong with McKay in Atlantis wanting someone smart and pretty, but it wasn’t so pathetic. Also, McKay was a strong character, and so much more mature, if neurotic :)
There is so much darkness in the character suite for this series as well, very Torchwood-esque build up in their development. Something that was really great about the other SG series was the genuine comic relief, this seems geared for a much different audience compared to the other series. Also, a gripe about the camera work, I might be in the minority here, but I hate ‘found-footage’ as a series style. One episode, yeah, I can deal, but all the time? Give me a break. It’s been over used, for this type of show at least, it’s not a horror flick, it’s sci-fi.
Finally, I want to enjoy the time that RC is on screen, but there is little development besides, ‘oh look, the scientist just wants results, people don’t matter, he’ll probably kill us all trying to figure it all out’. No personal development, now as someone who has worked leading teams that hate your guts, but you are still doing the right thing and getting results, this is extremely taxing, and wouldn’t last. The glimpse of someone human we see in Ep1 isn’t brought forth. He’s almost cast as the bad guy, which is ridiculous, considering how he actually wants to save them.
I’m not totally disappointed, I just think that they have such talent in the actors, and are trying too hard to fit the story lines of these characters all together.
