The Vast Fields of Ordinary by Nick Burd
This book is completely unexpected and absolutely lovely. As you follow Dade Hamilton through his final summer in his boring hometown in Iowa, before he heads away to college, you get to experience just how drab the life of a teenager can truly be. As a semi-closeted kid, in a small, close minded town, Dade cannot wait to get away, but finds comfort in friends he makes over the summer. The story felt extremely real to me; as if I was reading someone’s memoirs instead of a novel. There are extremely colorful characters that keep this story alive, along with plenty of drama. While I feel this story is probably an acquired taste, I highly recommend it.

Distance has nothing to do with friendship…Distance is meaningless. No one’s that far away unless they choose to be.

Getting attached to things is pointless. That’s how things get screwed up. People care too much about everything. Let it go. You’ll be happier.
