i finished reading this in like one day and it was so so amazing

enemies to lovers (sort of lovers to enemies to lovers to enemies??lol it's a cycle)

blurred lines between good and evil

main character is a villain (sort of)

amazing plot

a whole hidden world

time travel

rivalling families

monster court heist

biracial asian representation

a love triangle that isn't annoying (it ends by the end of the book anyway) (edit: it gets annoying in book 2 actually because I hate Nick now) (I love Aaron because who doesn't love a blonde, gentlemen-like, soft boy who doesn't really touch anyone but the girl he has feelings for...)

We've been creating the Anthropocene over centuries now. In a much, much shorter interval, we've come up with a complex symbiotic relationship between humans and computing machines that allows us to create models that have changed our consciousness. We look at these interpretations of climate and we see ourselves. All of a sudden we know who we are and what we are doing. All of that happened so quickly. It would be wrong to say that we aren't capable, in light of yesterday's transformation of our understanding, to begin to change the infrastructure of human existence. Yes, it's clear that we're living through a new mass extinction event that we've created, but because our machines can travel even faster than us, the speed and leverage that our prosthetics give us might very quickly enable another way of living.

Always this sense when travelling: Will I find it here? We are back on the road again, leaving the Omo Valley. Kucha's weary, bloodshot eyes are fixed on the horizon line. The enormity of land flows past, liquidised by the speed of travel. The great secret lies around the next corner, as it always will.

They say that travelling opens doors, gives people new perspectives. This is only partially true. People carry their doors with them: perspectives seldom truly change. But my friend is wrong. If we stay within out horizons, surrounded by people who are the same as us, it precludes all hope. We shut off any possibility of having our automatic beliefs - whether good or bad, right or wrong - smashed so their rubble can make new shapes. We will never be forced to understand that there are different ways to be human, different ways to be ourselves. And we desperately need that knowledge, even if we don't know it yet.
