Tomorrow @nick.clements of @mensfilemagazine will be with us at #dawsongarage for a rare chance to hear his story and celebrate 10 years of the magazine. “Men’s File: A Lifelong Project In my preparation for the Dawson Denim event on Aug 10th – in which I will talk about my observations on men’s style, both modern and historical – it occurred to me that, although ten years old, Men’s File represents only a quarter of a 40+ year journey into style that started when I joined my local surf lifesaving club in 1974. There were myriad reasons to join a Surf Lifesaving Club in this days. You could use the club house to store your surfboard (when total membership was less than 50 people), get your Surf Lifesaving bronze medal (which meant you could be a ‘career’ beach lifeguard) or get access to free wax, Surfer magazine, pocket-Ts from The Emperor of Wyoming, Cadillac wheels and knowledge of the language of surf and skate culture. Once in you were in, you joined a local elite of self-imposed outsiders who dressed and acted differently. In my high-school this numbered only four individuals. Twelve years after I became a fashion photographer and then much later an academic, but that first taste of expressing a covert way of life through secret visual cues became addictive, a hunger that can never be sated. After New Wave came mod-revival, then rockabilly and then deep underground into re-enactment and wider revival. There’s a lot more, but I’ll save that for the day.” Arrive early to avoid disappointment. @hollerbrewery @giantbrighton @zackowalker #dawsondenim #nickclements #mensfile #mensfilemagazine #vintagestyle #cool #denim #denimlife #brighton #brightonandhove #eastsussex #denimcommunity #denimforum #photography #inspiration https://www.instagram.com/p/B08_ebrjHOm/?igshid=bv03v0klliqg
