Dear editor, I am a fan of pomading and powdering my hair as is fashionable lately. Any hair advice that a poor soul like me can follow?!

Gentle Reader--

The Fashionable Coiffures you wish to emulate are Utterly Impracticable without aid of a Barber to Style and Maintain them, whether you choose a Periwig or your Own Hair, for the Curls and Buckles which are So Admired must be achieved with Hot-ironed Papillotes, Instruments for which a Good Barber ought to have. Once you have obtained your Hairpiece in the Coiff of your chusing, you must maintain it with Regular Powdering, applied with Brush or Bellows, your Own Face Protected by a Visor or Cone for the Purpose, the Powder being Commonly of Corn-starch or Flour, for the Very Wealthy a Touch of Gold, Lavender, &tc., is favoured.

Should you prefer to follow Brummell, for what Cause I cannot know, curling with Paper is still Necessary, and the Addition of a Pomade of Bear’s Fat, Liberal Use of Hair-wax, such as Pomade de Nerole, and Infrequent Washing will grant the Voluminous and Malleable Effect one requires to Artfully arrange Curls to fall Over the Fore-head and remain there. I advise, if you are to use this Method, to invest in a Nightcap.

Have you ever tried 18th century hedgehog hair? I feel like you could totally pull it off!!

I have not! I have been meaning to though, and to practice the side rolls more too. I did a slightly frizzy attempt at 1790′s hair once, but it was not a proper hedgehog at all.I’ll try it when I finish the nauseatingly stripey waistcoat I’m working on!

This IS from The Toilet of Flora. I love this book! I have read a ton of 17th and 18th C. cosmetics recipe books and this one is the best.

I was real into it for the first half hour or so. Seemed like a pretty realistic portrayal of pirate society. But it started to lose me after that and by the end I’d fallen asleep (I was in a super comfy chair and often fall asleep so it’s not really the show’s fault). I’ll watch a few more eps and see how it goes. There was some hot w/w kissing, and that alone makes it worth giving another chance.

Thanks everybody! I got a few funny looks when I went out, but mostly, no one noticed how weird the hair was.

Also, true confession time. I used the “Beauty” filter on the highest setting taking those selfies. I was hoping to look as much like a portrait as I could and also, like some snotty aristocratic jerk who had a hot date with the guillotine in her near future. ;)
