Nickolay Lamm

Pittsburgh artist Nickolay Lamm recreated Mattel’s iconic doll using the proportions of the average 19-year-old woman, as reported by the CDC.

Lamm first created a 3D version of the doll using real-life proportions, and then used Photoshop to add Barbie’s color and packaging.

In April, a website published a chart illustrating how anatomically impossible it would be for Barbie to exist in real life. With her extreme proportions, she would be forced to walk on all fours and incapable of carrying anything in her skeletal arms.

I find Nickolay Lamm’s work really informative, I like the way he thought about the pressure young woman/girls go through and that they have the be a certain way, otherwise they don’t fit into ‘society’. I like the way he took to using one of the biggest brands in the world to make a difference and make a stand, By using barbie, and changing its image it helps young people realise that theres no such thing and the ‘perfect image’ and that you are perfect. The impact the message will send to young people will hopefully help them realise that they are perfect and they don’t need to change or be like anyone else. 

I definitely feel as though this can inspire me to create something that has an important and powerful message , throughout and in my final out come to bring light to the situation.

That when asked “What’s the genesis [of the Lammily project]?” Nickolay Lamm responded, “I was reading something on the Internet, and I remember a commenter that kind of read my mind. I think it was on Huff Post. On some story, he posted a comment that said something like ‘To the male, to me, Barbie…she kind of looks alien-like.’ And that’s what sparked it. I agree. If Barbie were a real woman, she’d be intimidating and cold, and what I like about real women is that they’re warm and friendly. I just wanted to create an image that would reflect that.” The project was not about empowering little girls. And Lamm’s misogyny, his short-sightedness, and his total incompetence regarding toy design and the culture of doll-lovers made certain that it never successfully became about empowering little girls. I can’t wait for that little weasel’s brand to die.
