only a small child when otto hightower was appointed to be the hand of king jaehaerys. left with a guardian, lord hobert hightower, until he is of age to attend court.
raised along side his cousin, ormund, niclas was educated in the subjects of finance, martial strategies, and history by his uncles and several great maesters of the citadel; an easy string to pull, given the house's hand in the foundation of the order during the age of heroes.
maester alfador had once joked that, should niclas' ambition steer him away from the broadsword, he might be surprised just how swiftly he obtained his gold, iron, and brass links as a novice of the order, even before swearing his vows. this both delighted niclas and sobered him.
eventually found himself at an crossroads: either give up the dream of becoming a knight to don the maester robes of the citadel, or give up his thirst for knowledge in lieu of armor, sword fighting, and duty to his house and lord paramount of the reach. niclas eventually chooses the latter, but continues his studies however and whenever he can.

often underestimated due to the obvious nepotism afforded him, as well as the implications of heresy and paranoia of the king (the kingdoms were at peace - why need an eighth kingsguard?) but quickly garners the respect and trust of his brothers in arms.
fully believes that rhaenyra's claim to the iron throne is legitimate even after viserys' death and throughout the dance, but is obviously team green in the interest of protecting his nieces and nephews.
