sister keough’s office wan't open until late that day, for obvious reasons, and kit was her very first visit. five minutes later, he left, roommate transfer form in his hands. that had been his first thought as soon as nico had tied him up: well, i’ll never be able to sleep in the same room as this guy ever again. but kit was still hesitant to pull the plug. sure, nico had hung him up like a goddamned christmas ornament, but they had a moment in that kitchen, throwing rotten meat at each other like they were snowballs. well, okay, that wasn’t exactly a moment, but still.
he found himself stopped in the middle of the hallway, staring down at the transfer sheet. he tipped his head back with a sigh. it was stupid that kit felt bad about asking to change rooms, because he didn’t owe nico anything. they were roommates at best, and definitely not friends. and yet, guilt calcified and settled in the pit of his stomach.
when he brought his head back down, he saw that he was right next to the school trophy case, and he made a stink face. this whole nico situation, as well as his and jace’s findings in the forest and his lack of sleep, already had him in a dour mood, and then he just had to stumble upon the trophy case. the one with the picture of his brother’s baseball team at state championships.
kit looked away, only to have something else catch his eye, the familiar shape of his surname on a plaque on the well, and he took a step closer. he, obviously, didn’t spent much time staring at the trophy case, so he’d never noticed the name harold novak, class of 1995 valedictorian, engraved on a hanging plaque. he’d never known his father had been valedictorian, and, as was common whenever he was faced with his family’s accomplishments, kit was suddenly thoroughly overwhelmed with loathing, directed both at his father and at himself. that’s the only way kit would ever make his father proud, by having his name carved into that plaque, too. and no matter how hard kit tried, it would never happen. the roommate transfer sheet crumpled in his clenched fists.
he jumped back when he realized that nico, the man himself, had caught him, and he hastily hid the roommate transfer sheet behind his back. “shit, nico, you scared me.”
