Sentient Vehicles on Stage- A Unique Case

So, this post is about Red Ladder Theatre's 2014 stage adaptation of Nicobobinus, and how it portrayed the Black Ship.

For those unfamiliar with Nicobobinus, the Black Ship is an intelligent sailing ship that Nicobobinus and Rosie spend a good few chapters on without realizing it's alive- and, after Nicobobinus gets kidnapped by some pirate monks, Rosie is left tied-up in a locked cupboard in the galley, at which point she discovers that the ship has a mind of its own, and can even cook provided that she isn't looking at the galley.

In the stage play, the Black Ship is- well, restricted to the Prop/Actor dichotomy it's all Prop, but it goes beyond that mere categorization.

It is a Set.

(Those of you who aren't theatre fans might be ready to mock this- "that doesn't look at all like a ship!"- but please keep in mind that theatre requires just a bit more imagination put into it than, say, films or TV, and a bow of a ship that converts into a set of arched stairs is a rather ingenious set design).
