Ovadia & Sons Spring Summer 2014 History was made this week, and I for one plan to make a [meager] contribution by dutifully documenting it: for posterity's sake. Ovadia & Sons - who have made huge waves in the #menswear community for over 3 years now - are unleashed. In this case, an unsuspecting NYFW is the lucky victim of North America's crushing style wave for 2013.
Its fascinating how obsessed we've all become with the Ovadia brand. Despite a traditionalist's foundation, and both feet planted firmly in the American sportswear tradition, the brand continue to push a new and dynamic kind of menswear that - paradoxically - feels somehow familiar. The individual pieces this season work harmoniously together, and though each is a show stopper they do not clutter or distract from one another.
I've seen the bomber and block-print sweater combo in countless variations, and bringing seasonal prints to the table via Hawaii is nothing new. Despite what sound like criticisms, these are in fact expressions of astonishment: for designers to take tropes so familiar and make us assess them with new excitement (and old sentimentality) is a difficult feat. It is analogous to successfully executing double think, except there are no tricks or deceptions at work on the observer. Your eyes do not deceive you: this shit is really just that good.
The Ovadia SS2014 collection also incorporates a progressive color story, as year long neutrals gradually give way to washed - but none too saturated - greens and browns (on which there are several variations). Also indigo, because it denotes the spirit of relaxation, a tenant of design clearly important to the Ovadia brothers.
Without a doubt the strongest collection at NYFW thus far, I'd bet good money that Nico had something to do with the very relaxed - albeit luxurious - styling going on here as well.
