A blizzard warning takes effect Tuesday morning near the Cascade Mountains, while lowland snow could fall in western Washington later this week. The National Weather Service based in the Seattle area has not had to issue a blizzard warning in more than a decade. But on Monday, that advisory was sent for areas through the Cascades and Olympics, stretching from the northern edge of the state to the southern border.A blizzard warning constitutes blowing snow, wins over 35 miles per hour and less than a quarter mile of visibility for over three hours at a time. This warning will be in effect from 4 a.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday.KIRO 7 Pinpoint Meteorologist Nick Allard says we can expect between seven and 15 inches of snow at the passes through Tuesday. Monday evening, winds will increase to gusts of 40 to 45 miles per hour with a risk of power outages.Once the blizzard warning is issued Tuesday, the passes could end up with one to four feet of snow. After that, things get interesting for the lowlands as temperatures drop on Thursday. According to the NWS, 40 to 60 percent of the Puget Sound Lowlands receive an inch or more of snow between Thursday and Saturday, with a lower 10 to 15 percent chance of getting four inches or more.Happy Monday!
