Alpha placed his hand against the payment sensor, satisfied when a green light indicated approval, and the available selection of rooms appeared on the screen in front of him. This seemed to be one of the few places now that still allowed him special access, as, slowly, the old user codes and permissions of Toue Inc. were being deactivated under ‘new management’. He wondered if this establishment was particularly slow to adapt because it was almost entirely automated--impersonal menus without a sentient eye to catch the error in real time. Either way, this might be the last and only time he could use his privileges to come here. The transaction he’d just made would probably be noticed and the code quickly rectified for future visits. He had really come to hate the concept of having to pay for things...

But for now, he quietly selected a room. Even if he only had one opportunity, now was as good a time as any to make use of such a place. He still hadn’t really explained anything to Nano, who had yet to ask, standing behind him in silence. Alpha tended to doubt the brunet would entirely understand the concept of a Love Hotel even if he tried to convey it--figured it might be more successful just to show him the place first.

The screen closed out with a courteous ‘thank you’ for his ‘purchase’ and the machine dispensed two key cards, each with the same room number on them. Alpha kept them both (until he could show Nano how to use it) and took hold of the other’s wrist to lead him to their room. Waving his key card in front of the scanner, the android pushed open the unlocked door to reveal a bedroom aglow with ultraviolet light and a soft, fluffy bed that gave the illusion of floating off the ground.

Alpha took several steps into the room before turning back to Nano briefly with arms spread in display. “This is ours for the night; I ‘bought’ it. A real bed, a shower, and...lots of other things.” As he spoke, he set to rifling through the drawers on either side of the bed, pulling out and examining whatever caught his interest--plenty of toys, different lubricants, condoms...

39. Renaissance Faire

Alpha didn’t know what they’d just ended up in. His experience with this kind of specialized commotion in Platinum Jail told him it was a celebration of some sort, but it was unlike any he’d ever seen–not even the traditional Japanese festivals in Flame Willow compared.

“Hey…do you know what this is?” he asked Nano beside him.

Most people were dressed in types of clothing he had never seen before; in fact the style of everything was foreign. Maybe that was the explanation–a holiday that originated in a foreign country. He couldn’t possibly tell which, though, taking in the sights and smells–sulfur, smoke, incense, leather, hay, food…

–The sound of music piqued his attention, and he followed its melody, expecting Nano in tow.

Alpha had been getting cats lately. He hadn’t attracted them before, and it wasn’t like he ever had any food lying around to be of interest. But he had actually seen more than one occasionally haunting the warehouse he had made a ‘base’ of sorts. They weren’t that much of a bother; actually, he sometimes found them entertaining. He’d gotten used to the sporadic sounds of meows or the clatter of movement, which was...actually probably a bad thing, as he would think back on it.

The only thing that caught his attention this time was the location of the sound. The rafters...? He didn’t even know they could get up...or down from there. A curiosity spurred by no superseding mission led him around one of the towers of crates to stare up toward the ceiling.

--Systems froze in shock to catch a glimpse of a humanoid figure seated casually along one of the beams--just briefly, before disappearing. But there was no questioning what he saw. Had he been being watched? Followed...? For how long was this person here, around him, without his knowledge? How did they move so fast? And what did they want?

Belying his growing apprehension, his voice called boldly into the dimness, teeth grit, "I know you're here! Show yourself now before I hunt you down!" Ears focused in now on any remote sound, wide eyes and quickened breath betrayed his true state of alarm.

Out there it feels like it’s all bad, especially when you’re alone. The thing is though, it’s not all bad. It can’t be, it isn’t. Life isn’t. Where there’s life, there’s hope, heroism, grace and love. Where there’s life, there’s life. I hope that’s not what you’re walking away from.
