Crow from my backyard.
The #NictitatingMembrane is also called the third eyelid in cats. It comes from the inner portion of the eye. This is Blumi, she’s sleepy, slightly awake and you can see the Nictitating Membrane slightly covering her eye. When I used to watch my other cats when I was younger, I noticed this 3rd eyelid only appears when they are really in deep sleep. And if they suddenly woke up by something like a loud noise, the deeper the sleep, the more I see their eyes covered by it and it’s takes a slow time to move back. #iPhone14ProMax More on @iphonephotopractice https://instagram.com/iphonephotopractice/ #photooftheday #photography #photoshoot #mobilephotography #mobilephoto #iphonephotoacademy #📷 #ıphonephotography #iphonephotographyacademy https://www.instagram.com/p/CjiiJc6plq4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Despite her white head and tail feathers, I barely saw the mother sitting in a tree in the shadows at sunset. I opened the aperture and took some more shots. There were seven in total. Of these, I got two with her nictitating membrane closed, making her look more carved than real. #baldeagle #eagle #nictitatingmembrane #kenai #kenaialaska #kenainorthbeach #sonydschx400v #sonydsc #sonycybershot #SonyCameras (at Kenai Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUA7El-vVyj/?utm_medium=tumblr
Bath time for magpie. While watching this bird bathe in a dirty rain puddle my first reaction was that it wasn't that bright, that it just didn't care, or both: it was getting oil and other chemicals all over itself. What a dirty bird, I thought. Then I thought about how those things got into the water... Sorry, magpie. Oh, and the nictitating membrane is visible! #waterpollution #birdbathing #magpie #magpiebathing #nictitatingmembrane #sonydschx400v #sonydsc #sonycybershot #SonyCameras #kenai #kenaialaska #cityofkenai #picahudsonia #blackbilledmagpies #americanmagpie (at Kenai, Alaska) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTe3_MpnZKO/?utm_medium=tumblr

𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 ♂️ American three-toed woodpecker, male This bird should become far more common around these parts, as they move into areas with dead or dying trees. Their range particularly overlaps that is spruce trees, and as we have been undergoing a spruce bark beetle invasion, as well as forest fires, well, there's plenty of food and habitat for them here. On the plus side, though they do peck, the don't really bore; rather, they peel the bark to get at their food. As they usually find dead trees, this is a good thing, all part of the breaking down and renewal of a decimated woodland. Until 2003, they were considered the same species as the (now) Eurasian three-toed woodpecker, until a difference in mitochondrial DNA was noted. These are the only three-toed woodpeckers, which, I suppose, is why they aren't called a yellow-headed woodpecker, though it is only the male and juveniles that have this yellow cap. This was seen at the abandoned park on N. Spruce, Kenai, Alaska. Two Ravens on a derelict fishing boat. I'm not sure what was going on here, but I think the one on the left is a fledgling still trying to induce regurgitation from its parent.
