For the first time, social media overtakes TV as Americans’ top news source - Nieman Lab
There's a lot that's concerning in this research, including the unfortunate reality that 71% of those surveyed would not be interested in paying for news at all. Though not actually funny, this quote made me lol.
"Audiences in non-American markets, the authors write, “put much more emphasis on impartial deep analysis (getting information) than opinionated hosts. "
Speaking with a friend recently at a legacy media company , she shared that so many of the "journalists" at her institution believe their role is to advocate for their positions ("values") rather than report facts. This is from the Right and the Left, and really blossomed on AM Talk radio and Fox News before reaching mainstream newsrooms and the internet. Opinions left the Op-Ed pages and started driving the headlines and image selection. Reporting became about they the journalists perspective, preferred narratives, and cherry picked facts + images. The internet also forced journalists to start opining on social media, providing constant "takes", and drive traffic all day. Our journalists became influencers so it's no wonder the influencers became journalists.
Paired with media illiteracy and our preference for opinion over fact, it's a real problem that we need to find solutions for as a society.
